Photographer’s Note
This is Buk-mun (northern gate), one of gates in Daeheung-sanseong in Pakyon-ri, Kaesong-si, North Korea.
The Daeheung-sanseong is a mountain fortress made of stones that is 10km in girth and was built along the redgeline of Mt. Cheonma and Mt. Seonggeo. It is estimated that it was built in the Koryo Period, and that it was used until the Joseon Period. It was extensively repaired in 1676 of the Joseon Period.
Besides the Buk-mun, the mountain fortress has many historic treasures including four gates, several hidden gates, watchtowers and command posts.
