[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
I mentioned in the notes to the last photograph of Pyongyang that I posted that North Korea was suffering severe electricity shortages, but here is one place in Pyongyang where the lights are burning bright. I selected this photograph to provide a contrast to my last posting which was grey and gloomy, because that is exactly what North Korea is – a country of amazing contrasts.

This is the annual Arirang Festival – a dance and gymnastics extravaganza that is on a par with the opening ceremony of any Olympic Games. The difference is that the Olympic Games opening ceremonies are performed once every four years, but the Arirang Festival is performed six nights a week for two months (unless it rains) and involves 100,000 performers. The dance and gymnastic routines tell the story of the history of North Korea and the Workers’ Party Revolution with the assistance of backdrops that are formed by flashcards held by 20,000 school children. The flashcards change every 30-60 seconds throughout the 90 minute performance, and not once did I see a single card out of place.

The backdrop to this scene reads “Long live Kim Il Sung Korea”. This refers to President Kim Il Sung who died in 1994 but who still retains the title Eternal President. On several occasions when I was in North Korea I was asked to raise my glass of vodka “for a toast to the good health of the great leader President Kim Il Sung”. The current head of state, Kim Jung Il, does not carry the title of President. He rules the country in his capacity as General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and Chairman of the National Defence Commission. He has been elected to those positions unopposed since his father’s death in 1994.

The dates in the stadium refer to the year of independence from Japan (1945) – or “our victory over the Japanese aggressors” as my North Korean guides put it – and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea (2005). The 8.15 at the top of the backdrop is not the time, but the date (August 15) that North Korea was liberated from Japan. This is the date that the Arirang Festival starts each year, and it continues through to October 10 which is the Founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea Day.

No PP except for a little sharpening and +10 saturation to compensate for the loss of saturation that occurs when optimising the file in Photoshop. I didn’t want to sharpen it too much as this was shot at an ISO setting of 800 or 1600 and I didn’t want to increase the noise. I don’t recall which ISO setting I used for this one as I was swapping between the two to get the best exposure I could without reducing shutter speed below 1/125 to avoid too much blur on the performers.

Hi david
What an idea to promote this country ? However it is a strong shot to show what a dummy guy is able to do...
I can't say if I like or not...
JP

What an amazing spectacle; You have captured the colours well and I don't see any noise. Whatever your political views you can't take away the pleasure this ceremony must give to the children in particular.
Kath

While the people starve the government puts their resources into this, wow.

That adds a certain profoundness to this spectacle, and your image, David, but not in the way the government intends. It's a beautiful monument to inhumanity, very well captured despite the technical difficulties. The exposure is spot on, and the framing is great. Nice work--it's important that we see these aspects of North Korea, though again, not for the reasons the governement intends.

Bread and circuses, without the bread.

Regards, Ken.

Hello David, it must have been a very special experience to witness the Arirang. Probably the most spectacular mass games in the world. I'd like to know if you got to see much else in the country. Presumably you were guided at very close quarters everywhere you went. One day I'll get around to posting some of my shots from here.

Hi David
Marvellous events and wonderful shot. It's so colorful and full of grace. The effects of the lights do really help your image to a more lively atmosphere.
But you should have used f/8 value to improve the sharpness for the overall image, the side image.
Still a good shot, David.

nice shot, i think i might need a bit sharpening, but very colourful and nicely framed

Well I must admit just from the photo that this is a very important event. Great capture in detail and very well framed from where you sat. Good work!

Photo:
What a great exposure! good details and you must love that 12-24 lens! Well done!

Politics:
Yes, the guy is a dictator but we wouldn't say anything bad about him if he was OUR dictator like saddam was in the 80s and many more are right now such as Karimov of Uzbekistan who just recently massacred over 700 demonstrators.. Let's stop the hypocrisy.

Thanks for sharing david..

Bright and colorful...so much in contrast to the previous dreay gray outlook. Here you could feel the beat, the vibrancy of it all. I guess you don't care much about politics when you are in this scene. For a while anyway.

Hi David;

What an interesting shot. Amazing the grandeur of their spectacles- especially in consideration of the worldly events surrounding the country. Amazing note to accompany the photo.

Well done David!

Hi David,
What a view and event, now I understand where are all the people who were not populating the streets the other day ;-)
Really an amazing and colorful view as well as a striking example of megalomania, I like you choice of this wide comprehensive framing to show all of the action, is it a cropped view or a stitch of several photos ?
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

i prefer this one, more party looking.........(see the next one of this serie)
very nice POV!!!!

david,

wow, I just came across this. I am going to get around to critiquing all your NK shots because for someone living in South Korea they are just fascinating. I think you are filling a very deep void on TE by showing us photos from this country.

The Arirang festival is simpy amazing. Ive seen footage of it on TV and it amazes me how almost robotic the people are. So precise, and so many people acting in unison. Its amazing that this is done in a country where the people have no food. This is how far brain washing can go.

The photo is great. You present the magnitude of this event very well, in fantastic colors and fantastic composition.

Hi David - wow, what a surreal place, and yuour photos and notes are a rare opportunity to know about this strange place, and the "long live the dead guy" propaganda just shows how out of touch with reality they are.

Hi David,
Yes, your right, nice photo as the contrast to the previous one. Very big show. I like the colors here, you captured its very well on this stadium, good exposure. Thank you for your informative comment. Well done, Bravo!
With BEST regards,
Arthur

this is indeed spectacular. good capture & compo.

Hi David,
A really beautiful show, and sure full of colorful lights. You captured well the atmosphere here and got beautiful colors. It is a shame that too many people are suffering on power shortage while the government is promoting itself.
With my best wishes,
Ricardo

You present an outstanding documentary from one of the last and probably most fierce communist régimes. I really enjoyed your images and stories, which account for more than half of the TE posts from this forbidden place and offer a rare insight behind the propaganda curtain. I know that all your pictures were approved by the propaganda officials, but it is easy to see behind the official masquerade. Well, in fact the official masquerade is the best part in these pictures. I sort of forgot that shows like the one depicted above still happen, 15 years after Gorbachev. It must have been an incredible experience (I mean, literally) to see all these places. It makes me feel sorry for the people that you show, but in the same time I'm aware that most if not all of them are too used to the system in order to realize what they are going through. When the food will entirely run out, they will follow the fate of the East-European countries. I think this might be the most impressive travel documentary on TE.

Hi David,
Very interesting picture. Another shot that illustrates how poor countries can put on a colourful show!
Great composition and very nice effect or mood created by the smoke. (enjoyed reading the note)
Thanks for sharing.
PAul

This is really a colorful event and put some other international events to shame.
Some how, I just couldn't understand the contrasting of events here.
A lot of people here requiring aid from other part of the world. Yet you see this grand event for 2 months and the hugh military spending.
You can call me anything as I just don't understand how things are working here.

Your note is priceless! What a great spectacle with all the elements are nicely captured. I especially like the smoke floating around the spot lights. This must be an awesome sight when you are actually there. You have captured the scene very well, with good exposure and colours.

Great image - lots of colour & contrast, but also a subject that's very unusual & I'd imagine that it's something not a lot of us here in the 'west' would get to see.

just incredible. keep showing us the world with pictures and comments like these

Impressive picture. That's a great document !
Thanks a lot for sharing.
Marc.

Amazing shot Dave

I love the organisation they show in this show.
