Photographer's Note

The Deosai Plateau, Baltistan, covers an area of 400 sq km, and all of it over 4,000 m high. It is a huge water store, and the snow that has built up there over the winter accounts for over 5% of the total discharge of the Indus. The data from weather stations monitoring snowfall on the Deosai is used to predict the peak flow of the Indus in the year.

In Chinese "Deosai" translates as "giant's abode", and the Balti name for the plateau is Bhear Sar, meaning "place of flowers". In September these flowers are seen covered by the first snow falls...
