They were sitting at the entrance of their grandmother's house, a one-roomed traditional wooden house on stilts ; the little girl is holding the top of the decorated ladder which is giving access to it, as the pilons are quite high.

A photo of the interior of such a house in another posting to come ; it is in the same time the reserve for the rice, the kitchen and the sleeping room and some decades ago, whole families used to live in that small space.

Modern times have come ; those houses are disappearing fast, in most places they are now difficult to find, which is a pity for the next generations as it is necessary to understand where we come from and also for the visitors who are interested in traditional architecture.

Hi Catherine,
such a lovely picture. Children all over the world are equally cute. Wonderful photo with peaceful atmosphere.

Hi Catherine,
Beautiful capture of those two chipmunks, so nice the happy glitter in their eyes. The one on the left looks so much like my own childhood :)))
Cheers,
Deniz

Hi Catherine,
Good picture of these kids. The framing of wooden doors of this beautiful small house is good idea. Good sharpness and colours.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Catherine, a very nice capture of the children in thier natural home made from indegenous materials. I love the way they constructed their "Etona", and yes I agree with that the traditional houses are fast vanishing. I have suggested to them that they should rekindle the technology of making that and pass on to the next generations and they can place such designs in the key tourist spots for posterity.

The downside of progress is that the people tend to forego their old traditions to look more modern and that they somehow feel progressive and having new "modern" homes. Otherwise, they feel they have not improved their lot and have not worked hard to bring them out of that period or age. I sense their ambivalence towards progress and tradition but we must preserve old traditions nonetheless.

I love this shot for several reasons, the hugely happy look of the kids, the detail in the ladder with the carving of perhaps their ancestors thus, making this somewhat of an heirloom and its just natural look, oftentimes I see shots that are so posed. You've got it all here.

If you would care to look at my photos, an Etona and Barlig a place where almost all else has been preserved in this province.

Saludos!

Thank you for visiting our country.

Mabuhay!
Raul

hi catherine,
thanks for featuring a foto that depicts life in the rural philippines. i hail from the south of the islands and ifugao is in the north. the happy faces of these siblings say it all- we are taught about being friendly to people especially visitors (like you) and it occupies a huge portion in our culture. i am with you that it is a pity this kind of dwellings are slowly fading and diappearing. i was in ifugao last march 2005 and i saw myself the changes modern tech has brought.
mabuhay ka catherine, at maraming salamat sa iyong pagdalaw! hanggang sa muli at sana'y bumisita ka muli sa lupa kong hinirang!

very nice, By far all the children I meet around the Philippines always put a smile to my face, such happy nice and innocent faces. reminds me of my childhood. Thanks for sharing this happy scene. It's sad to see all these beautiful traditional buildings go down, But every now and then (in my province) a few pop up here and there. But sadly, a lot has been lost. we should keep it for future generations and understand our culture, sad to say but the many Filipino's are not proud of their heritage, culture and country in general. I know people that refuse to stand for their very own national anthem. TAKE PRIDE. Pinoy Ako!

Merhaba Catherine...
What a pretty composition... The poses of the children are perfect... Also perfect smiles on their face... The point of view and the depth are wonderful too...
TFS...
Stay well..
Salim.

Bonjour, Catherine. J'aime beaucoup la jolie frimousse de ces deux enfants qui illuminent la photo de leur sourire. Les montants en bois de part et d'autre cadrent très bien leur portrait. Les détails sculptés de l'échelle sont intéressants.

Hi Catherine,
Excellent double portrait, that ladder is pretty interesting as well with that woodwork. Love the way the face have been lit up.
