Off To Sea

A humble 'paraw' going fishing to the deep sea.
I shot this in the strait between Iloilo on Panay Island and Guimaras Island (at the background) in Western Visayas in the Philippines. A bunch of these sail boats were leaving the beach where I was toward the deep sea, presumably to fish. In this area, fishing is basically subsistence, they fish what they need and perhaps a little bit more for local consumption. (The sea in this area used to be the one of the fishing baskets of the Philippines, but overfishing has driven the fishermen to go more distances.) The sail is decidedly homemade and the boat is the basic outrigger canoe. No high tech gadgets, just age old feel for the sea.
