Photographer’s Note
In 1974 it looked liked China & Russia might end up going to war. The Trans Siberian Railway runs close to the Chinese border for much of its length on the way to the Russian Far East port of Vladivostok.
As a precautionary measure, a duplicate rail line was constructed approximately 200 miles north & called the Baikal Amur Mainline or B.A.M. for short. The town of Tynda is the Railway maintenance centre for BAM. This is the monument to the endurance of the Russian workers who constructed the railway, often under very harsh conditions.

Hi Chris,
An interesting comment to accompany this beautiful sculpture. A very net photo highlighted well by this magnificent sky which contrasts well with the metal.

Hi Chris,
Such statues can be found in all including most remote corners of the former SU, good bottom up angle to magnify this one that symbolizes the railway importance for eastern regions.
Have a nice day JY

Hi Chris,
the POV makes it big and bigger. Good view against that pleasant sky and it shows very well the hard work of constructing a railway.

Great angle! This low shot, looking up at the statue really accentuates the size and the impressiveness of the monument, so that it looks like a giant. Nicely done!

You certainly know about the song "if I had a hammer" and here what a hammer !
Thanks for showing this monument of the USSR times, gigantic and powerful to glorify the workers.
Well done

Salut Chris,
On dirait une image sortie d'une BD ;-)
J'aurais aimé connaître la taille de cette sculpture, ton POV la rendant vraiment imposante.
Bien vu !

Hi Chris. A good POV to show this impressive statue. Most interesting story about the second line. 1974 seems very recent and fortunately China's growth has saved the war aspect i guess. An excellent commentary. TFS. Murray.

Hi Chris,
Not many people on TE have managed to get pics of both Korea and Russia, I think this series really adds depth to your TE portfolio! The socialist realism angle of the pic is really great, as the artform would be difficult to obtain anywhere outside of the former USSR. Such a harsh, gritty environment, but yet incredibly rich in photographic value! Well done.

Hi Chris,
This low angle POV really allows for the full dimensions of this monument to be appreciated. You controlled the strong light here well. It would be interesting to know what human cost was incurred with the building of the secondary rail line. Shots like these and indeed much of your Far East series are a valuable addition to TE and knowledge generally.

Hi Chris,
I kind of like the way sculptures are shaped here in style similar to cubism and the POV make it looks so solid, strong and determined. The exposure is spot on and the loosely scattered clouds provided a nice background. An attractive shot!!
Have a nice weekend.
