Photographer's Note

This photo is by no means an artwork, rather some information about the Earth.
This is industrial area around the smelter town of Karabash in the southern Urals, built on a now exhausted copper deposit, known to be one of the most poisoned places on the Earth. There used to be also a significant nuclear weapon storage facility nearby, not sure about if it is still operated. People try to leave this scary place, not all can (around 15000 live in close proximity to the scene shown).
Major contamination came and comes from ore beneficiation and smelting operations. Since opening, the smelter has produced around 30 million tons of metallurgical slags and flotation wastes. As the last mine was closed in 1991, the smelter began to process concentrates from distant deposits as well as secondary metal, including Pb.
Contaminants: SO2 emissions, fall-out of metal-rich particulates from the smelter, acid drainage from old mine workings, leachates from disused waste dumps and tailings dams.
This is a very scary looking place. This photo does not reproduce the terror one feels when looking around at this Martian scene, which leaves you breathless literally...
