Normally in February the rivers in Saint Petersburg are frozen over, especially small ones like the Moyka (Мойка). But this year's winter has been unusually warm (global climate change, anyone?) and the rivers and canals in SP are partly to mostly ice-free. (So much for all that long underwear and heavy sweaters I hauled around Europe.) Still, I managed to get this shot of a wintry scene from the Sadovyi (Садовый) Bridge No. 2. I was aiming to capture a sense of winter even in the currently unfrozen North.

Technical: In RAW, temperature set to Daylight, then some raising of clarity and vibrance. In CS3, I converted to B&W, and used the High Pass sharpening technique. Time of day was about 14:00.

Nice lines. I've always been a fan of angles and lines...and a beer can? Is there a lot of litter there? Also, I've been turned into a huge fan of placing images inside "frames"...I think this is one that could benefit from a frame....

..."the high pass sharpening technique"...i am going to have to look that up now to find out what it is....ah the never ending life's lesson in photoshop... : )

Hi Daniel,
Very nice ice pieces on the ground and the reflections among them look great.. Beautiful detail of the nature..
Good night..

Hi Daniel, great idea with this photo. Love the different shapes created by the ice and the water. It seems to need a little bit more of contrast. great composition and POV.
Good job.

Daniel

Daniel,
you're quite right. What a weird moment to go to Russia right in the middle of winter. Well, yet you got a quite intersting shot with some graphical effect. A better weather with a blue sky certainly would have boosted this image, but the idea of your frame is superb. I like it!

Hi Daniel,
Beautiful zig-zag lines you have captured. I like the idea of making it b/w that brings the freezing mood.

Really well done, Daniel, you've been to the city where I was born and brought a graphical and unusual picture in good BW tones. I also like the tree reflections broken by the zigzagging lines of the ice. Compliments for having seen this.

Cheers
Alexander
