[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
I was taking pictures in Moscow's Pushkin Museum when I spotted this woman and her friend doing the same thing. It occurred to me that they would make an interesting contrast to Rembrandt's Portrait of an Old Woman - Age versus Youth - so I stretched my Russian vocabulary far enough to get them to pose for me.

I cut out the other girl in PP, because when I saw the images later, I realized that, quite unconsciously, this one had positioned herself in a pose almost identical to the one in the painting.

Technical: The lighting is not ideal. Here is one case where a fill flash on her eyes would have helped, but of course that's not allowed in the museum. (Nor tripods.) So I played with lighting and levels as best I could (though I'm still not completely satisfied) and cropped here and there.

Hello Daniel
Apart from the problems with lighting, which were probably inevitable under these circumstances, you have made excellent use of the opportunity which presented itself! The girls pose, her hairline and draped jacket echo the painting so very well, and the colours of brown and rust are very pleasing.
Well worth capturing!
Best wishes...Maggie

Hi Daniel!

Very interesting shot! This is some likeness at their face features, and the girl really looks like a distant relative of that old woman :))

The fact the young woman is wearing a shawl is unusual, and so appropriate in this image, that you couldn't have arranged things better if you had set it up. Excellent job of handholding. I'm not too convinced about the crop either, mainly how tight it is on the picture frame, but you have achieved an unusual image in difficult circumstances. Well done
Kath

Hello Daniel -

Great capture as the girl does seem to replicate the woman in the image. I think you could of used a bit more DOF here as the girls face is right at the edge of the DOF ( a touch soft). I find the crop a bit too tight on the left and top but the image still works.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Bonjour,
belle photo de ce portrait de ces deux parentes, le cadre bien dans le coin et dans l' autre la plus jeune.
Bien penser et bien réalisé ce portrait double.

Amitiés Thomas

Hello Dan,

I concur with your decisions, and observations — Having Rembrandt's "Model" in the photograph was fortuitous, cutting out the less compelling model was wise, using a fill flash would also have been wise. Please, don't worry about critiquing it, but in my 1990 shot of Rembrandt's "Old Rabbi", I had a different purpose in including the not-so keen viewers — the vertical centerline passing through one eye of the subject.

Warm regards,

Bulent
