Byelorusskaya Metro
 |
|
| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
Stalin intended the Moscow Metro to be an "underground socialist kingdom" whose immensity would overawe both locals and visitors. All (or almost all) of the stations are built in marble (a practice that continues even today, as I will post sometime soon), and many have lots of socialist-realist artwork.
I like this shot of Byelorusskaya Station because it projects a sense of Stalinist massiveness in the marble lamp, while it also shows the commuters hurrying by. I don't know why the one woman in the foreground is standing still (overawed, perhaps? more likely just tired).
Technical: I did a lot of work on this one which I did not record, but High Pass sharpening was definitely applied. |

hello Dan,
the photo illustrates perfectly how the Moscow Metro looks, it does tend to overwhelm any first-timer ;) I like a lot how you have left the marble lamp to dominate over the scene and dwarf the commuters, it certainly emphasises the point in your note. very nice work in what must've been very difficult light.
with kind regards,
Kristine

Thanks for sharing,

Daniel,
your moscowvian metro shots are really quite inspiring. The play of different levels and using the foreground as the dominating element is very interesting. The woman standing there contrast well with all the other people blurred by rushing by. Indeed the PP that you did gives a nice plasticity.

Hi Dan,
I saw a documentary on the Moscow Metro on a travel tv channel recently and I was impressed with it. I iike the way that it was designed and all of the art deco in it. Stalin at least had one good idea. This is a very interesting shot and I like the inclusion of the busy commuters and the profile shot of the weary lady beneath the lamp. This is a most interesting travel photo with excellent notes!
