Spice Boxes
 |
|
| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
The Moscow Memorial Synagogue (which I posted a picture of yesterday) has a number of display cases holding artifacts from eastern European Jewish culture, now mostly vanished. This particular displays is of some nineteenth century spice boxes, which are used in the Saturday evening Havdalah service (about 5 minutes long, and generally done at home) acknowledging the end of the Sabbath. You put some sweet smelling spice, such as cinnamon or cloves, into a spice box, and there is a point in the ritual where everyone smells the spices, so as to draw out the sweetness of the Sabbath a little longer.
These spice boxes are among the most unusual I've seen, as the openings are in the scales; a person would bend the fish slightly in order to open it and release the spice scent.
Technical: Cropping. B&W conversion, with sepia tint. |
