A Peanut Vendor Photo

Photographer’s Note

Oddly enough, it was often harder to get pictures of men (at least, interesting men) than women on our Central Asia trip. But this guy was willing to pose or to ignore me (I forget which, at this time), and he looked almost too distinguished for his job, so he made a good photo. The square cap he's wearing is the most common men's headwear in the region. I tried one on myself once, but I found it uncomfortable - too stiff. You have to break them in, I suppose.

Technical: In Levels, brighten the highlights end. Then I used a light burn tool to tone down the white nuts and the bowl.

Note: I did use the on-camera flash for this shot. I find that by setting the camera (Nikon D80) to aperture preferred and lowering the f/stop, I can use flash without making the image garish. Sometimes.

I know what you mean; he looks very smart. He also looks proud. You did well with your toned down flash as it is not evident in the shot.

Another very nice market scene show the local people doing their daily routine of activities. Very good details of the man's feature and the array of nuts on this shop. the weman in the back with there colorful costume giving more essence to the local culture and flavor. I truly enjoy this type of image with a story behind the shot and culturally enriching to the mind. Thanks Dan.
