Off the Silk Road: Wakhan
The social standing of a family is expressed by hunting trophies. It takes the life of a lot of Siberian ibex (middle) and Argali sheep to be "somebody" in the Wakhan valley. Today the bored border guards and foreign killing parties take an even heavier toll on the ungulate populations. With hunting going unchecked the state deprives itself of a first rate ecotourist attraction. The picture has been taken in Namadgut Poyon (2580 m alt.).

Siberian ibex= Capra sibirica. It is related to the Alpine ibex, Capra ibex

Argali sheep= Ovis ammon. It is the wild ancestor of the domestic sheep, Ovis aries. There are several races; one of them is the Mouflon of Corsica and Sardinia, presumably brought there by prehistoric man. See the excellent site on Ungulates: http://www.ultimateungulate.com/
