Photographer’s Note
Padaung Woman
Her name is Marianna, she’s living in Mae Hong Son for over 16 years and she has the longest neck of her tribe.
But more than that, she was the warmest and most interesting woman I’ve met in this village and I had the chance to have a long discussion with her, while she was holding my hand all that time. She had a very calming voice and it wasn’t intimidating to get in relation with her.

Fascinating custom, the long neck tribes. Im quite amazed you got to get that close to her, usually these tribes dont like mixing with outside influences. When I was there they had a token 'on display' villagefor tourists to see. Congratulations for getting this close to her!

An incredible shot, Andre. The colors are so clear and nice and the detail is so sharp you can see the fine lines in her face. She has kind eyes. A beautiful shot of a beautiful person. And your note is just excellent! Kind regards,

Andre,
Again you present a picture from this beautiful and proud people. Despite the fact that you shot at 1.2 i still see a lot of sharpness in the face (right eye just out) and on her earrings and golden rings. I like it the way she is not staring in the lens, she looks very proud this way...wonderful.

Merci ;))

I am always blown by these long necks tribe. They are real queens so your title is very appropriate. Your photo is classic André. f/1.2? Wow! Perfect technique here, although probably I would step down to 1.8 or 2.8 to capture the crown. But the posture you capture is great. True royalty.

Salut Dr Jones,

Hi Andre,
She certainly looks like a person who is very interesting with many stories to tell. I like that you have captured every detail of her face and the rings on her neck. Nice tight composition for this lovely expressive portrait.

Quel cou mes amis !

I believe this is your fifth shot of the Padaung Andre, and they are only getting better and better. Perfect sharpness and focus point, which is really important using that 1.2. You nailed it, directly on her closest eye. Love the depth, and use of the DOF in this one. Great colors and composition. Just a great looking portrait. Really great. When I first saw the price of that 1.2, I said no way is that worth it. This photo definitely shows that in the right hands, it is worth it...This really looks good (sorry, I said it a couple of times, but it does).
On another note, if I don't talk to you before your trip - have a good one. I'll be gone when you get back so, god willing, I'll talk to you in May or June of 08'. Keep on posting, you're only getting better and better. I can only imagine the backlog of photos I'm going to have to look at when I get back.
Great work.

You are actually a portraitist rather than a architecturist aren't ya? It is obvious. Forgive my ignorance but I don't know what this 1.2 is for, yet i can feel its greatness when i look at the bokeh. It is something like trying to see under water without any googles. Another great part of this 1.2 is obvious when i feel so close to that woman, as if she is about to hold my hand rather than yours. She stays there so sharp and real! And what to say for those golden rings! It should be great to be the woman with the longest neck of all. WOW!
I cannot imagine my charisma if i could go to my boss's office with such a long neck, and look at him from a quite high above. I guess he would increase my salary...
Colors are great, utilization of technology is at its best, her expression is unique... What to say more... This one is great!
Congrats,
Deniz

Oh my god look at this picture. Man, you really bring up different portrait from some ethnic minority in Asia which is pretty cool. One cannot believe that this is true if they never travel. Very good colors and good sharpness. Your 85 1.2L is just superb! I guess there are very few people here on TE use this lens. Very nice

Bon week-end!
