We were hanging around the Hua Hin train station, (an art practiced by all film crews) waiting to get a shot of the 3.40pm train arriving from Bangkok.
With at least an hour to kill I decided to practice panning and shooting moving objects, something I’ve never tried. I’ve seen a few examples on TE which are simply stunning. To be honest, I didn’t have a lot of success, either everything was too sharp, or everything was too soft. I changed a few different settings, until finally, I tried putting the auto focus onto centre spot focus and started again. Again I had mixed results with this too, but, this shot I liked.
The background isn’t as out of focus as I’d liked, but I happened to get the girl looking at the camera just as I hit the shutter. Strange that pretty well all of the other elements in the shot have varying degrees of softness but she is quite sharp. Thinking about it, maybe she was moving her head backwards as I pressed the shutter, I’ll never know. I guess that’s one of the drawbacks of auto focus.
I’ve a long way to go to perfect this technique, but it was a lot of fun experimenting. I trashed about forty shots to get this one.
By the way, the train was an hour late, but hey, that’s the charm of Thailand

Hi peter. The experimentation has paid off. I am drawn to her gaze, but I also like the look of concentration on the faces of the guys. Also, I like the colour scheme, particularly the green against the golden skin tone. Regards. Klaudio.

Peter, for me, there are two good things about this shot 1. The subject. In India, three on a two-wheeler is not uncommon but in your shot, it looks interesting and 2. The expression on the girl.

Other than that, the shot looks a tad unrealistic… maybe over-processed? Ole Humphrey may not have fully approved!

Cheers!

Sridhar

The image has been very intelligently and very beautifully composed with such sharpness and an interesting scene. The pov is great

Hey,
Great capture of the typical SE Asia sight - many on a motorcycle.
I like the feeling of movement and attitude - given from the expressions on their faces.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Peter
great picture, fantastic POV and amazing effect
super quality TFS regards lukasz

Hi Peter,
Here's to trying and experimenting! Something I've not tried myself yet, but I think you've jut motivated me to give it a try! It is a little more blurred than desired, butt like you say, you've captured the girl still which is nice. What makes it even better is this is such a common scene in this part of the world; 3 up on the Honda Dream (the work horse of SE Asia!)
Great shot, and thanks for showing
Regards
Lee

hi peter, its unusual to see only 4 on a bike, your time has been well rewarded the expression on there faces says it just every day life.

adrian

Impressive expression indeed, that's the whole benefit of digital photography, to be able to try again and again and thus getting better! :D

Hello Peter,
I think you are successful in this "panning" technique. the background is blurred indicates movement of the camera. The adult trio is interesting, to share a ride. Here we do have the same going, but usually would be the thirf person is a child.
Opportunity well taken and exploited.

Regards,
Foozi

This is unbelieveble ! I am not talking about the panning, which is very good. I'm talking about the baby on the motor bike !
Regards Stefano
