Ashgabat, the capital of independent (from October 27, 1991) Turkmenistan, has borne this name since 1882. According to archaeological data, settlements belonging to the Great Silk Road have existed on the territory of the present city since at least the end of the first millennium B.C. The chronological distance between them and the present city is so great, that we are not able to speak about any townbuilding continuity. That connection traces back to the beginning of XIX century, when there was a Turkmen urban settlement here, called Ashgabat. The population of the city is about 700,000 and is situated between the Kara Kum desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range.
The climite of Ashgabat as well as of all territory of Turkmenistan is hardly continental with hot and dry summer, average summer period temperature may exceed +40˙C, in winter from -6˙C up to +8˙C.
Ashgabat was destroyed by an earthquake on October 6, 1948 and approximately 100,000 people were killed. Virtually the whole city has been rebuilt since then. The avenues are wide, buildings are set back from the street, and everything looks modern. Nowadays are still a lot of construction sites in progress.

Hi Attila,
great shot. I like the way you cathed the sun and the colours it made, but especially the light on the street. Very subtile.

Hi Attila. Nice shot of this faraway land. Are you experiencing any feelings of deja vu, considering the Magyar ancestry? Lucky you to be travelling through such places full of history and past glories. Regards. Klaudio

Hi Attila,
Pretty sunset, with really spectacular orange tones. The buildings stand out in that beautiful sky of very elegant form, and I like the brightness of the avenue that sees at the right of the image, with so few cars.
The photo is a little dark but very good, and difficult to execute technically, since the light of the sun, although not very hard, it affected your position directly.
Done well.
Regards,
Josep

The picture is abit dark, but the colours of the sky make it lively. I am very interested and pleased to see these buildings. I had arleady seen pictures of them as an example of the urbanisation program of President Niyasov, but never as a whole. The mixture between traditional shapes with the cupolas and the more modernistic towers is intersting;
Thanks,
Yannick

Ciao Szili,

Unikum! Szép képeket és hétvégét!

Hi Attila,
Spectacular shot of the sunset in this historic city. The colors on the sky are amazing and the rhythm of the buildings sillouette in the background create a nice effect. The foreground is not completely dark and I like the lighting on the street seen at right. Good POV and excellent execution!
Have a nice weekend,

Nagyon tetszik a kép - érdekes ahogy sziluettként élnek az épületek és ha jól megnézem mégis látom a részleteket. Ez a tökéletes expo... ( Érdekelne, hogy hova mértél?)

Bonsoir mon ami Attila,

Hi Attila
I really look forward to your Turkmenistan photos, since I would probably see it only through your eyes. This is quite spectacular with amazing colours of the sky. But what is most appealing to me are the buildings with the dome on the left & symmetrical towers of the modern buildings stretching across the horizon

Hi Szili
I like the composition you have framed here. The row of buildins has created a nice patterned and repetitious effect. The colour of the sky is stunning and contrasts markedly with the darker foreground. The catch of light on the main road is a good lighting effect and adds to the atmosphere. Very good work.
