Travels on the Silk Road: Kara Kum at Repetek

Because of the current events in Turkmenistan I put some pictures of this country on TE. The pic shows a piece of the Kara Kum near the Repetek Gorug (Reservation). The dominating Saxaul trees (Haloxylon aphyllum) send their roots deep into the ground. The ancient Silk Road led from Tus in Korashan/Iran to Merv in Turkmenistan, then through the Kara Kum to Oxus river and on to Bukhara in Uzbekistan. Alexander, Genghis Khan, and Tamerlane passed through here (and now me on bicycle). As did the forebearers I had to carry a lot of water.

The slide is bad because taken with 400 ASA film by error. It was scanned, on the pic some smudges got removed, the pic was brightened and sharpened. Sorry for the quality.
