Photographer’s Note

Samanid Mausoleum was built in 9th century as a family crypt for Ismail's father (later, Ismail and his grandson Nasr were also buried in it). Erecting crypts was at that time against Islamic law which forbade erecting post-mortem monuments. However, in the middle of the 9th century, that rule was broken by one of the caliphs and Ismail Samani merely followed his example.
