Photographer's Note

From the noisy streets of Hanoi to the calm waves of the Perfume River. This idyllic view was not far away in a remote part of the Vietnamese countryside but a short distance from the large city of Hué. I had hired a private small boat to see a pagoda a few km outside the city.

I snapped a few photos on the way to the pagoda and going back. I will show three today, all very simple views of the daily life of people living along the river. Any of them could have been a main upload.

According to Wikipedia the Perfume River (Sông Hương or Hương Giang) derives its name from flowers falling into the water in autumn at orchards upstream, "giving the water a perfume-like aroma". Hmm... that must have been very long before the air was polluted by the "aromas" of factory chimneys and thousands of cars and motorbikes.

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Here is a larger version of the main photo.

Next time I will show you the pagoda I went to see in November 1993.
