In Hanoi airport on our way back to Bangkok.

Remember my picture "Raw Expectations". Here's the rest of that event.

I saw a lot of Vietnamese locals converging in the entrance to the departure area. Then I heard some wailings. Relatives were sending off family members to Taiwan to work either as domestic helpers or factory workers. There was a horde of them. I saw them hugging, crying, kissing, etc. Then the man (probably the recruiter) called them in. That was when I took this shot. It was a moving experience.

I can easily identify with this situation. Going back home to the Philippines twice a year, I saw similar situations. Raw expectations...false expectations...full expectation. I can go on and on. I have so many stories to tell along this line. This is reality and you ought to see and know this.

Converted to BW. I am posting the colored version. Give me your feedback as to which one is a better version.

Great shot, Manuel! Very well used of the DOF.
Nice atmosphere. The main subject is well focused. A little sad shot here... Nice captured.
**I think the B&W works better as the color might make us a little distracting and the girl is out of focus.

The choice of the black and white Manny is better. It gives more d intensity to the composition. A photo report realized very well. Thank you for the very touching note. Very well done Manny.
Le choix du noir et blanc Manny est meilleur. Il donne plus d'intensité à la composition. Une photo reportage très bien réalisée.
Merci pour la note très touchante.
Très bien fait Manny.

I like very much the emotion here in this photograph. It is difficult to leave behind the people who we love very much but time come when we need to. Chinese people also go out looking for job in other country. Good work!

Intensity of tones, intensity of emotions. Blur and sharp thoughts. Again a lot of "Life" in your shot. Greatly catched, perfectly rendered. Congratulations Manuel.

Great notes to accompany a very convincing photo of true-life human expression Manny.Well spotted.

I usually prefer color before B&W but I think you did the right choice here, the B&W version concentrates much more on the womans face and her emotions. The colors only distract in the other, and they aren't very spectacular either so you might as well be without them. Nice shot.

Good shot with a good DOF (the focus on the woman crying in the middle of blurred figures comes out great.

This is a very difficult shot to convey. I'd try a tighter crop.

Excellent choice for a B&W to present the feelings here, Manny - the sadness here is "colourful" enough...! Yes, the DOF is perfect and brings all the attention to the crying girl. It is a very tearful and moving scene. Thank you for sharing. Very well done!

I support your choice of b/w, Manuel, it is much more effective in this case. This is one ogf the picture which makes you think about the story behind the scene. wonderful, Manny.

hi manny, i think i am going to be iconoclast again here.. since my pref. goes to the color version...;-) not a way to differentiate myself, i swear! lol;-) somehow, the colors are soft and sad and greyish enough to convey another strong feeling of sadness...However, teh b&w version works very well too. still the color is my best choice, IMHHHHO;-) lol

I am glad that you remind us that cos' for most of us who never had to live family separations or geographical dispersion, it is something totally unknown. and i know how painful this can be! thanks Manny

WOW, Manny, pure emotion here. Lovely use of B&W to capture this moment. I think the color version does not have as much power as this one...so keep it in mono. I like how you composed the shot, looking through the people at your main subject. Nothing really to nit pick here. Excellent.

a good moment well documented. the crowd in the blur takes us to the chaos in the airport.
its a very good capture of emotions :)

What an intense scene, Manny. Great way of putting full attention on the woman by looking at her between the surrounding people. Even without the context provided in your note - but more so with the knowledge about the setting - I think b&w is the more evocative choice here. Great work you did once again.

Version B&W, is much emotional that the version color. A photography realized with the heart.
Very good photography, and an accompanying note, which reflect unfortunately the condition of the human beings.
Thank you Manuel.

You surely captured a tense moment here - the impression in the womans face tells stories - that for sure.

The B&W version works very well - but I think the coloured version more touching.

Very fine work both Manuel.

Wonderfull photo, Manuel.

It's soo expresive. I like this black and white.

Well done

Great shot Manuel. This is a very sad part of life. For the people who are left behind and often for the ones going abroad. I have read some terrible stories, especially about factory workers. Hong Kong has around 200,000 domestic helpers, most of them from the Philippines.
I prefer the BW version. It represents the sad feelings of that moment.

Both versions are great although I prefer the BW one as it adds more drama to the scene. The colors become just a bit distracting to the girls expression. Great composition with the two people helping in framing the centered subject.

Nice note. Being Portugal a country of emigrants many people would identify with this image.

The b&w one is better, the other one is irritatig, due to the green thing in your way.
yes, indeed this a touching story, an sadly a common one in poor countries, as i see it too. but people here go to work as caretakers of old people in italy, canada or spain. It may become an archetype, soon, because of it's frequency :) .
