This is how I remember the biggest cave (so far discovered) in the Ha Long Bay. The cave is called Sung Sot which means Surprising or Amazing Cave. (Thank you stromboy for your correction) It's breathtaking from the first to the last moment being in it.
This is a limestone formation and the cave was created by nature in the process of Karst. Limestone rocks are very susceptible to dissolve when treated with carbonic acid (H2CO3) where H2O is water and CO2 is taken from the atmosphere. It of course needs time, geological time (and cannot be count in "human" years).
Another Karst formations are stalagmites growing from the bottom - not connected with the roof (like the one here, stalagtites growing from the roof but not reaching the bottom and stalagnites which connect the roof and the bottom usually then two previous formations join.
A scary stare of nature, isnt' it?

Hi Michal;
I just wanna correct the Vietnamese for this cave "Sung Sot" but not "Dau go" cave, it literally means Surprising or Amazing Cave. I know this place so well 'cos I've been here hundreds of times as I used to work as a tourguide. The object in your photo is named Budda Rock as seen from a far it looks so. Personally, I dont think this POV is best for the scene. Anyway, I like the perspective and the mysterious atmosphere in your pic.
Regards
