Whether you arrive or leave Lang Co, by train as it travels near Tunnel Number 6 (45 km from Danang) or by vehicle as it takes the “elbow turn”, you will end up having your photo of Lang Co similar to the following shots: *one, *two, *three, *four, *five, *six, *seven, *eight, *nine, *ten, *eleven, *twelve.
I cannot escape that common rule. I made the same shots in 1989, 2001, 2004 and my 2007 version I posted here today.
In the past, right at this mountainous spur they ejected a statue in the shape of a giant turtle carrying on its back a stone stele engraved the story of the recent fights to expand the southernmost boundary of Kingdom to this bordering area with Champa Kingdom. The image of a stele on back of a turtle has been believed a representation of the nation’s longevity under that era.
For travelers, they select this point as best view just by chance and convenience—unless they enter the village, stay, and walk around, there won’t be a better view of the lagoon than from this point. For the aged boys like me and my friends or schoolmates of same generation, we all share the common memory of youth as somewhere half a century ago we often entangled each other to skip class and push our bikes up to this “turtle spur” to enjoy the “free” ride down without pedaling. Needless to say, this game was very dangerous but our parents hadn’t been aware of, since none of us dared to reveal the secret to invite whipping…
Please share with me, and don’t tell my daddy. Thanks.
