[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
The Forbidden Purple City, nestled inside the Imperial City of Hue, was formerly the sole preserve of the emperor, his queen, nine separate ranks of concubines, and female palace servants. No man but the king could set foot in this 10 hectare city-within-a-city on pain of death--his own sons were banished when they reached puberty, and the only non-females permitted within the inner sanctum were palace eunuchs. In imperial times the Purple City consisted of more than more than 60 buildings arranged around 20 courtyards, but it was seriously damaged by fire in 1947, a tragedy compounded by the disastrous Tet Offensive in 1968. At present much of the former Purple City is given over to vegetable gardens, though in the north-eastern quarter the Thai Binh Lau or Royal Library, an elegant two storey structure built during the reign of Minh Mang (1820-1841) survives and has been recently restored. It is a place of great beauty. I give a more comprehensive view of the Royal Library in a workshop.

Very nice composition with the flower well in focus. The colours and the out of focus background create a nice scene. Good details and contrast. The note is very interesting too. Thanks Vincent.

Roberto

Hello Vincent. A beautiful and color-glad photo as well as a very informative text. The flower in the foreground dominates the picture. Everything works very calmly and contemplative. A picture for the soul. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Bonjour Vincent
Très bonne mise en valeur de cette fleur sur ce plan d'eau où se reflète agréablement l'arrière plan.
Bonne journée
Cordialement
Gildas

Hi Vincent,
The purple flower stands out from the architectural BG. The reflections working nicely with the pool. Nice work.
With Greetings from India

It looks like a kind of hibiscus that beautiful flower. As the building is quite fr I think that focusing on the flower was a good idea. The background is yet very visible and with the added WS we can have a good view of the place. Your note is really interesting and I never heard about it. It means that we always learn from other experiences here on TE. Well done.
Antonio

very eye catching colour on that flower... the background looks a bit tilted but still great, my compliments...

all the best

Hello Vincent,

A blur background with the ruins as subject, and the pleasant reflection in water, very nice composition too, with the flower well in focus. TFS.

Have a nice day,
John.

Hi Vincent

I really liked Hue. Did you do the boat trip up the Perfume River to the old Kings mausoleum & palace(s)? The purple flower here is a great addition. Good sharpness, dof & reflections. Tfs!

Hi Vincent,
Beautiful impression. This is splendid observation and very nice realization. Excellent POV and superb cut. Very attractive details and fine colours. Excellent shot. Have a nice day, thank you
George

This is an unusual but beautiful photograph. The focus on and colour of the flower was a wonderful idea. Although the building is thrown out of focus we can still admire the wonderful reflections which also star in your WS.
Kath

Bonjour Vincent -

This is a very fine image with a purple flower sharply in focus against part of the Purple City. Part of me wants to say that this would have been a better image with both elements, flower and building, in focus but then the other part of me says this is perfect. I think this is a no win situation and you made the artistic decision to go with focus on the flower. All of the technical details seem to be spot on. Well done!

Thank you for sharing.

John

Salut Vincent,
Is this a photo of the flower or of the palace? It really doesn't matter, as it is absolutely wonderful. The palace makes a beautiful backdrop to the flower, which is very well enhanced. A great compo and perfect dof.
Amicalement, José.

Hi Vincent,
The purple city with the purple flower, very well seen! I like that you have chosen to focus on the flower, the calm reflective water and blurred building make for a lovely background. Well composed with the branches coming in through the photo.
Regards
Wanda

Hi Vincent.

I like the detail of the flower breaking the compo in this great background!

The reflections are also good.

Hello Vincent,

the purple colour is really looking beautiful in the background of the water and the house. The refletion is nice so is the shallow depth.

regards

Sayan

Lovely flower in this lovely composition, Vincent !
I like the reflections and how you framed the picture.
Very well done
Aires

Hello Vincent,
Excellent composition with very beautiful colors and wonderful DOF. Great reflections. Regards,

Hi Vincent,
I like this POV ...the background reflection is just as interesting as the foreground flower. Well captured and composed. Very good overall image quality. Good work ... tfs.
Cheers,
Renier

Bonsoir Vincent,

Hello Vincent
You tried something different & I like it. The shallow DOF used here is good as it highlights the purple flower, so very sharp against the blurred building in the BG. The reflections also work well. Good work!

Angshu

a facinating place and a facinating note.It is an aspect of Vietnamese history that I had never heard. The formation of the picture around the single purple flower, works very well. regards Kevin

Amicalement,
Josep

This is a very creative photograph, Vincent, and well composed with the bauhinia flower in just the right place, and the building nicely positioned too in the top of the frame. I like the use of f/8 for this as it has left the background not too much out of focus that we can't see what it is. Excellent work. Cheers . . . David

Really a very good idea to introduce the Purple City with a purple flower in the foreground, Vincent. I like a lot your play with the DOF havinf the flower razor sharp and the restr of the compound blurred. That provides a magical touch and maintains the feeling of being a forbidden city.
