Traditionally farmers of rice and corn, vegetables and opium poppy, the H'mong are now to be seen in areas that have opened to tourism selling their handicrafts. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the small town of Sapa in Northwest Vietnam. Originally established by French colonialists as a hill station, the town looks and feels more like the Alps than Southeast Asia. It has seen a rapid rise in tourism over the last few years. These days the streets swarm with H'mong women and girls as young as seven selling their wares to tourists wearing their wonderful traditional clothes and beautiful smiles. This is the well known side of the H'Mong already very much pictured on TE.

It is not clear however that minority people get a fair share of tourism money. While tourists come there to see them, they do not own any of the shops, even less any of the lucrative hotels and restaurants. The only way they have to benefit of tourism is to endlessly get after foreigners in the streets of Sapa or during the treks. You are never alone there, always followed by 2 or 3 H'Mong women. The minute you show you are about to buy, 10 more pop up all around. Too much sellers, not enough for each to make a living. Not even clear they keep 100% of the very few money they get...

In the villages poverty is visible everywhere, a very big contrast with Sapa itself. And this is not about to change since children are not even going to school. Many of the older generations never attented school, and so have no understanding of the potential value of education. That coupled with their very labor-intensive farming practices means that many of their children either aren't sent to school or attend so sporadically that it benefits them very little.

Hi Vincent.

It's a pity we suffer things like this. The children should be playing or in the school.

An excellent picture to show us that some people lives badly...

Rgs, OScar

Very sad to see people and specially children living this conditions. Your picture depicts a real life drama around the world. Very good image of tis little angel. Well composed and your note is very interesting. Thanks Vincent.

Roberto

Hi Vincent,
An excellent and sad portrait of this young girl doing hard labour from a young age. A well documented and thought provoking image with good details.
Regards
Wanda

Really poignant photograph Vincent!

Hi Vincent,
This shows the life at Sapa. The small cute girl posing towards you is looking like tired of taking too much load over her shoulders. The portrait is perfect and shows how vietnam is still living in remote rurual areas just like other South Asian countries.
Excellent photo and intelligent note.

Hi Vincent.
You captured a real life drama around the world. Behind the all shining side of the cities you can find this kind of sad reality.

Very informative note. And a great shot of this young girl with such an innocent face. The basket she carries is almost as big as her! As well as the shovel she is carrying she must be weighed down.

It was also good that you captured her feet which are lacking shoes.

Amazing picture with this tittle girl, my friend !
It is pity this scenes in the modern world. Excellent work Vincent

Bonjour Vincent,

Christian

she is so adorable... but the condition she is in is heartbreaking... the worst part is that she is not alone... not in her village, not in her country, not in the continent she lives in or in fact not in the whole world... and we sometimes can not decide which one to buy between two pairs of shoes for instance, the red or the blue... and buy them both in the end...

a real good shot vincent, congrats...

all the best

Important photo. Life of children in many countries is rather difficult and hard. It deserves to show here.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards.

Olá Vincent, very impressive portrait, with an excellent informative note, as usual. It's a very sad image and a powerful one that could be used to warn the world about these situations. What a contrast of that innocent face with the axe on her shoulder!
Great post.
Ricardo

It's a pity that this happens on earth. Excellent capture of the sad working atmosphere.
Best wishes,
Achim

Great story in your note, and a great photo also. There is not much in this girl her face that makes her happy. The way she helds her hands, her naked feet...this looks like child labour. An impressive picture you got here Vincent, i like it a lot. Technical not your best, but seeing it from the emotional side (and that is what counts in this one) an absolute perfect photo.
Great work in showing this.
Regards, Henk

Hi Vincent!
Lovely photo! Great POV, composition and perfect colors. Great photo!

Bonsoir Vincent

Hi Vincent;
It's very touching photo of the little H'mong girl. I like your POV; I know you didn't ask her for a pose (in fact, it is impossible, isn't it). Look at her face and sad eyes, they express lots of things. For many others, this may be the first time to see such circumstance in your photo but for people living in Vietnam, it's not something strange. I used to be working as a tourguide for 5 years and Northwest region was my favorite route, I could understand the situation so well. Thanks for sharing this with well note.

Salut, Vincent.

Her pose, her demeanour, her eyes all belie her age. She looks no more than about 5 or 6 but everything else is as an adult. A very touching, thought-provoking image Vincent.

Hi Vincent,

Very intense and evocative image .. the quiet determination smoldering in her face .. her bright skirt and childhood ... under the weight of this shovel .. and the mud ..

take care,

John

Bonsoir Vincent,

Bravo!

Great portrait from the countryside, but it`s not nice that this girl has to work so hard instead of going to school.

Hi Vincent,

Wonderful portrait with a nice note. It really sad that many children suffer from this, they should instead be playing or attending the schools. the same problem is present in India too.

Compositionwise this is nice. The expression on the cute face is always a treat to watch.

This is an excellent portrait and a sad moment. Unfortunately is something that we see very ofte in the countries of the, so called, "third" world. Your note too is excellent and is necessary to read it in order to get the full point of the photo. Congratulations!

Interesting portrait and detail by the little girl Vincent. Normally I like a subject as here in a setting where you place the camera in her height. Still in this special setting the 'looking down' effect works well - make her even smaller...

Hello Vincent,
A good social drama in this photo, indeed good photojournalism. It is sad to see these people miss out on their childhood completely. The colors and definition, perspective and composition are first rate.

aesthetically strong image but the content is very challenging to look at. you have provided a most excellent note, one that opens the eyes as much as any image might.

Hi Vincent,
Very nicely composed image. The details, the colors, the expression on the girl's face is absolutely superb. best regards. Salvator.

Hi Vincent. It is hard to believe that these conditions still exist. We westerners are so pampered. Excellent in every way except maybe a crop from left and top. A black and white version may give an even more desperate look to the girl and her surroundings.

Hi Vincent, as photo is excellent, the notice is very very interesting although it makes us not happy.
It is really very pity.

Hi Vincent
On the thumb I was thinking 'qu'elle est mignone' butas soon you see the scene, a shiver goes through you, childlabor, all the joy and dreams of youth she have to miss, who are we to condemn this as not long ago we were sending young children in to coolmines, we can only hope and fight poverty in the world by our support but a family has to be respected.

What a wonderful picture. The eyes of this beautiful child speaks volumes... great capture. Your notes about poverty reminded me of scenes in Istanbul (Turkey), Shanghai (China), Jakarta (Indonesia), Tehran (Iran) where small children are used as either abused (I can't say used) as laborers and/or beggers.

This contribution moved me profoundly. Her sad eyes appeal for something to us deeply. Incidentally did you hand this photo to her?
Great post.
