This is the picture taken of the oyster shells exploitation from Lăng Cô lagoon, in its western area named Trường Đồng, away from National Route 1A and inhabitant area.

As one of the best beaches in Vietnam, Lăng Cô is also an immense source of oyster shells that offers the income for many local families: burning of lime. The four limekilns give jobs to an army of nearly 300 workers: the off-shore collecting group, the transporting group, and the on-site professionals at the limekilns who mix the shells with coal and maintain the burning process of 10-hour batch. Every 15 cubic meters of shell will yield 12 tons of lime. At this speed, "the Lăng Cô Four" produced some 16,000 tons of powdered lime annually. However, under current domestic-craft process, they create a thick curtain of CO² and dust floating in the air that become a white coat adhering to trees, vegetables, walls, roofs and even wells and water containers within surrounding area.

Recently, local people abandoned the manual method and applied machinery into the process. They operate 40 scrapers and suckers to go two yards deep under the lagoon terrace and this even causes great turmoil to the life of seafood here.

As Lăng Cô has been elevated from "commune" to “town” level and the upgrade to be provincial tourist zone is underway, local authorities still have a lot to deal with the menace of these limekilns against public health, the pollution as well as the demand of jobs for their people in case these sites to be shut down or removed away from the lagoon.

Another rather unique and instructive upload from Vietnam, Anh Thahn. Thanks for both the image, which is fine and the information, which os precious.
All the best,
Francis

You've captured very well the atmosfere in which the people are working. Surely and hard job in a smoking area. A + for the note.
Cheers, Jean-Claude

One of your best, Thanh!
Don't you think this is a combat photograph — the battle for food? The loss won't be immediately, but it is sure!
Take care,
George
