[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
A solemn Buddhist monk performs a religious ceremony in the solitude of his empty temple. Religion had been banned for so many years during the strictest of strict Communists regimes. Now a little freedom is allowed, and the people are so grateful, to travel locally in their own country without offical written permission , and to pray their many religions.

Hello, Gloria--
i like your idea in this one, showing the Buddhist monk with his incense in the temple during a ceremony, but i feel like two things hurt the execution here--first, the decorative item at right is a distracting element against the outside of the frame... it probably needs to be either all in or all out. Second, the strong backlighting from the windows hurt you. Maybe a little bit of fill flash (but not too much) would have been nice to balance the exposure.
Thanks!
sam

interesting composition, exposing a monk in his enviroment. However, light conditions were difficult to control as light was coming from different direction, thus the contrast of under and over exposed areas of your picture

Hi gloria williams

I like the composition and the effect of the natural side lighting in this photograph. It gives the picture a definite air of peace and serenity.

That window with that ugly looking building disturbs this mood somewhat and I think should be softened a little.

I will workshop it.

This is an interesting study of A Vietnamese monk of the Mahayana tradition. I am glad to hear that they are allowed more freedom now. The Theravada monks of Vietnam (The Khamer Krom) still face disadvantage and persecution from the state. The Mahayana tradition migrated from China and keep many of the Chinese customs and ceremonies, and they chant it an ancient form of Vietnamese. I have some friends from this sect. But we have no god is Buddhism, Gloria, I am happy to say, so he, not I, for that matter, could not be called a man of god. We might call him a man of Dhamma, that is, of truth. It is a nice picture and nice topical note. regards kevin
