| Em is a fisherwomen, and rows a boat in the Thu Bon river for the tourists. I was invited to her home to have some traditional Vietnamese food with her family. Her husband is a night fisherman. It took her 5 years to save money to buy this home from a relative, she still owes most of the money for it. The reason I left the wall behind him so high, is too show the high water marks. Every year, once, twice, or more, their 3 room house is submerged into the flooded river, at least 6 ft. or more deep, inside the house. The ceiling is very high. In the middle room the walls do not reach the ceiling. Wooden logs are laid across the walls. When the river is rising, all the furniture, everything possible, is placed on this high row of logs, hopefully above flood levels. Behind the husband, you can see where the water has lightened the paint in lines. They are very happy to have a home, the monsoon floods are simply part of life on a tiny island in the river. |

Hi Gloria:
I think you are talking about Thu Bon River, not Sa Pa...
Regards,
