Hello Henk,
Your absence from Trek Earth over the past month has been pity, but we all knew that from your travels you would return with a wealth of delightful and very unique photographs to share with us. This image is exceptional, what a character. It is difficult to perfectly capture any given emotion to the highest standard but I believe that you have achieved it here. Congratulations and a very warm return.

Hallo Henk,
superb way to capture a hole and some golden surrounding ;-) He seems to be very pleased being captured by you and the tight framing is here very pleasant as the background offers nothing and he is much more put in place. Wonderful skin presentation.
good to see you back and a Happy Easter. Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hi Henk
Happy seeing you back! and also happy to see you again on Lille mmeting...
Nice sharp portarait ! What a smile, as you said! However I prefer my teeth ;-)
Speaking about the photo, the lightening of the face is perfect in spite of the hat. The crop is little too tightened for me. I like the picture.

Dag Henk, welkom terug.
Mooi werk.

Goedemorgen Mijn Vriend ;-)
So good to have you back !
And so sorry to learn that you had such a bad weather that deprives us from new fantastic landscapes from you... But if all the portraits you brought back are of this class, I am eager to see the rest of your production :-)
The perfection of this portrait is so high quality. Depth of field management is impressive with just the right aperture value to have the front of the man's face very sharp and a blur from the side of the face down to the background. I suspect that you had some nice pp to enlight the eyes so shiny under the shadow of the typical hat.
Bravo for this first post which I hope is the first of a long bacth...
Have a nice day,
Best regards, Christian

Hello Henk,
Glad to see you back ! :o)
Sorry for the bad weather in large part of your trip, but this kind of portrait, just amazing, will help to wait for your landscapes :o)
You caught here so beautiful attitude, and your exposure is just right, on the face of the man.
Great job, as always,
Regards,
JB.

Hello Henk,
Welcome back on TE !
I hope that you benefitted from this trip and that you bring back a tons of photographs for us !
Here is a smile which captivates the observer. Not only for surprising teeth but by the natural side of the face. An atypical portrait, very fine carried out.
Bravo and see you soon !

Welcome back Henk -
That's what I have heard about VN that's it's so damn hot you can't take it or it's hot and so wet you can't take it. I have to laugh at the smile and the missing teeth but it is a wonderful portrait with excellent lighting, great eye contact, and exposure. This is a spot on portrait in all aspects. Well done.
Thank you for sharing,
John

Hi Henk,
no matter if landscapes or portraits, in both genres there are good and bad ones. And this is an excellent one, also for me as a "landscape man". Here for me it´s fascinating how you put the focus exactly at his eyes and nose. Would not be possible with my camera. Good equipment pays off.
Compliments, Chris

And what a smile it it. He doesn't care about his teeth as he is pleased for a break in the monotony of the rain I expect. Excellent "Henk" quality with wonderful light teased out from beneath his conical hat. I assume that the blank background is the featureless wet sky, perfect to avoid any distractions.
great to have you back

Hi Henk,
Your perseverence paid off, as usual. Yes, portraits certainly are more tolerable of bad weather. The hat gives nice framing. No sign of rain here although background is grey. I wonder what it looked like with really big raindrops all over...

Hello Henk! I know what you mean with the greyish light that you get down there, from the moisture, from the pollution - a sad sky. But we take what you have for us :) Oh I am just kidding. I mean the smile here, so cute, and I guess he gives it not to everyone, it is the one behind the camera that helps to make the shot come out as this one. I like the almost white background helping to focus on the man. I wish he could have made a little business but he has not lost his humour.

Hallo Henk!

Good to see you back with so beautiful portrait. So vietnamese, the hat, the smile, the teeth :) I love your DOF in particular with the blurred right shoulder, the effect is wonderful. Great tones as well. Indeed Hoi An is a great source of interesting portraits, especially early in the morning before the tourist crowd wakes up.

Nice to see you back, Henk, I'm sure you've had a fantastic trip and there shortly will be lots of proofs to it on TE. Here is a fantastic portrait, fantastic in its expressivity, of course the quality is top and you have cropped it well with nice assymetry created by cropping off parts of the hat.
Cheers

Hello, Henk, I've been wondering where you've been!
Great portrait shot; my second thought was that it would be perfect for a dentist's office. :-) I think you could have toned down the hat a bit - it's overblown, but the information is still in it. But other than that, a great shot.
Best,
Dan
hello Henk
nice to see you again!I hope that in spite the rain, you had good time in these countries! For me,no problems if you have more portraits than landscape because I like this kind of photos very much!On this one,I think that this great smile is worth all the landscape in the world! The fact you have cropped the hat makes it stronger!I like the short DOF making his shoulder blurred.I notice there is no overexposition on the white hat ,that is not so easy!Superb!

Zeer mooi portret Henk, scherptediepte is fenomenaal!!!

Hi Henk,
Welcome Back! You know that I am a portrait person and I am really looking forward to seeing all of you fabulous portraits! Overcast weather is prime portrait weather and your versatility really pays off when it comes to adapting to the weather. I simply don't have the patience to do nothing but landscapes and constantly wait for the right lighting. This interesting looking gentleman certainly looks like a very happy and content individual. His smile is very contagious. Outstanding portrait!

Hallo Henk,
It looks quite a character! It's interesting how those ugly teeth and their strange gold treatment make him just funny instead of repulsive. I guess that it's that open smile.
Perfect POV, DOF, sharpness and light management. If I wanted to be picky, I'd point a wee OE on the hat, but I guess avoiding that in a bright surface without putting the face too dark is impossible even to a master like you. :-)
Regards, José.

Hello Henk,
Goed foto werk Henk.
Prettig Paasweekend,
John.

Goedenavond henk,

Hi Henk,
Sorry to hear you had bad weather. It sounds a lot like my trip to the North Sea countries; fortunately we had the music to come back to each night.
It's interesting to me that at one time this fellow had some very expensive dental work. It makes me wonder about his history. I think that is the highest purpose of TE, to think about the rest of the word and your excellent photo accomplishes this task well. I also think portraits are more telling than landscapes (I just lack to courage and skill); so I'm still looking forward to following you on your trip.

So you're back, nice to see you around again, and start with one of your fine-tuned portraits. What I really enjoy is the straightforwardeness of it. All the details to be seen on this face, the wrinkles, the pores, the eyes looking at you, the light within them, the hat that gives the graphic touch, the soft colors. Very much your special touch, great work that amazez me every time. Looking forward to your next ones, despite the weather:-). Always enjoyable notes too!

Olá Henk, nice to see you back with fresh pictures from SE Asia. Either landscapes or portraits, whatever comes from you it's allways fantastic. Your story made me remember of my first days in Laos (I even consider to catch a plane to another country...). This a great one to start. A very enjoyable smile with excellent details. A bit withish, his hat, but it doesn't disturb the whole at all and it's funny to watch his not so good but still valuable teeth ;-)
Have a nice start of week,

Hi Henk
A good portrait of this Vietnamese person. Effective tight framing, with good dof. The 1st time I went to Hoi An, in 1999, it was great, but IT was spoiled by too many tourists, in 2001 on my 2nd trip there. The My Son Champa ruins were worth a look. Tfs!

Fantastic portrait! Shame about the weather for the landscapes but I guess that dull grey skies make for the ultimate non-distracting backdrop when you're doing portraits. A good portrait usually begin with an equally good "character casting", a remarkable face with unique features. You've done an excellent hunting job here, finding this singular gentleman with a fabulous expression.
The way your subject fill the frame is impeccable.

This simply seem to me to be a classic of the genre. And you know, with classics, better say nothing that say something that would be stupid.
Look Henk, you know your material, you know your job, you know how to use your gear. What to say????
And especially after almost 70 exclamations of approval?
So, I won't read those critiques and will probably repeat...
Good "human" photography. The smiling eyes, the friendly wrinkles, the nice cone hat and the shoulder slowly melting, thanks to your intelligent use of a f/4 aperture, into the vacant background...
A classic...

Your first post from your trip is an spectacular portrait. How can you get to know such characters show the pro blood running in your veins.
The DOF is on spot, but maybe the cropping too tight, IMHO. I wonder how he would have looked with the full hat in the frame.
As usual, a great job.

Hola Henk.
Glad to see you back, hope you had a nice trip. This is an awesome portrait of the old man and his nice smile, captured with good colors and excellent details. Sorry about the bad weather but I know we will enjoy your beautiful portraits. Well done.
Best regards.

Henk,
it seems that you got all the 3,500 shots ready to be posted and that your initial reluctance in restarting at TE is overcome. You already posted great shots - your usual trademark. I'm not afraid to see portraits. Keep it coming! Every single is a learning moment for me.
Fantastic the lack of inhibition to provide such a warm and all encompassing smile. I wonder what signs you had to make to open the guy's soul to achieve this moment.

A great smile, Henk, and his teeth really make it. I believe the focus is superb, also the choice of empty background. Cheers ;) Daniel

Hi Henk!
What a fantastic portrait. You captured the mood very well and I think, the moment you took the picture was exactly the right one. The sharpness is fantastic, her face is really sharp and the backside of her hat not (good choice of f/4).....great!
As always I like the big white frame and the positioning of the womans head is very good! In my eyes one of your best portraits so far.
Regards,
Jonas
