Young Monk
Back to vietnam;
Although the European term monk is often applied to Buddhism, the situation of Buddhist asceticism is different. There is often a trial period prior to ordination, to see if a candidate wishes to become a Buddhist monk. If he does, he remains in the monastery; otherwise, he is free to leave. In Theravada Buddhism, bhikkhu is the term for monk. Their disciplinary code is called the patimokkha, which is part of the larger Vinaya. They live lives of mendicancy, and go on a morning almsround (Pali: pindapata) every day. The local people give food for the monks to eat, though the monks are not permitted to positively ask for anything. The monks live in monasteries, and have an important function in traditional Asian society. Young boys can be ordained as samaneras. Both bhikkhus and samaneras eat only in the morning, and are not supposed to lead a luxurious life. Their rules forbid the use of money, although this rule is nowadays not kept by all monks. The monks are part of the Sangha, the third of the Triple Gem of Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha.

I saw this young monk in Hue at the Thien Mu Pagoda which is also a monastery. Staring straight forward. All i did was waiting till he would make eyecontact. In a split second he did, after that no more.

Hello Henk,

This is awesome. His eyes look very interesting they way they look straight into the lens. The black background add to the balance of the image as it enhance the colours and the subject. Excellent compo and very interesting note attached to it. Thanks Henk.

Roberto

Hello Henk. Eye contact. An impressing Portrait. It works outstanding. Particularly the intensive view of the monk into the camera is worth seeing. Exemplary also the informative text. A good shot. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Yes its all about the eye contact here. His serious and serene pose i broken for that split second and captured! - BINGO
Incidently Henk, was the background so or have you darkened/blackened in the PP?
groetjes
Elaine

Hi Giant,
Well at first glance it looks like a picture taken for military service begin, but reading the note I see I'm not far from it, monkism or any corporation being a sort of army. I like how he emerges from the surrounding darkness, and this blue clothing lightens well the scene, finally yes the eye contact tells about decisive timing.
Have a nice day JY

Hallo Henk,
that shy impression is not only visible in his eyes and face, the whole capture offers that mood. A lot of help here is the soft blue and the dark background makes it even stronger. Wonderful combination of facial impression and integrated mood.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Another wonderful portrait. He looks so still and contemplative for a young boy; he must be learning well his lessons to become a monk. As an ex-teacher I know only too well the behaviour of most boys and I can imagine this as being a battle of wits and patience between you and him. He would be well aware of you standing there and he would be determined to ignore you, except that one split second his curiosity got the better of him... and Henk pounced! You don't need me to tell you about the technical excellence do you?!

Yout patience paid off Henk, this is a very good view of someone that isn't going to show interest in you again. Dolor and clarity are great and the note is very nformative. Well anticipated and captured.

hello Henk,
the waiting was well worth it, the photo speaks volumes how the young monk does his best to focus his mind, but he's still human, so there are those precious seconds when the curiosity is too strong to resist a glance sideways :)
superb portrait, as usual. the dark background works well, and I like a lot the soft light on his face and light clothes. great work.

with best regards,
Kristine

hello Henk
I like the soft light on the face of this young monk, who emphasizes it well from the black background.I also like his serious expression and his side glance!A superb and perfect portrait!

Hallo Henk,

Hi Henk,

I know that's not the case but it looks you took this in studio due to the incredible light. The background also fits well...that's why I thought that...please, do not reply explaining this is about technique and waiting for an opportunity. I know that. Great portrait shot!

Hoi Henk,

Goed verhaal!
Mooi.

Groeten! Dennis

hello henk

wondeful! the darkness of the pagoda serves well to bring out the radiance in the boy's attire and face. love the contrasts on his face while his skin color seems to be rendered perfectly. cannot help a feeling that his look is quite cold, but that is explained well by your note. he was peeking at you just for a split second trying not to lose his formal and serene look. good timing on your part. ;))

with warm regards,
kristaps

ps. i thought christian monks had a 'trial period' too.

groet Jaap

Well done Henk. The whole image is about his suspicious look and you caught that very well. The light is natural and it suits this image. Gotta love the clarity of the L glass lens.
Phil

groet Henk
Henk

Nice capture, good lighting. You used the natural dark BG to good effect.

Hi Henk,
beautiful and technically perfect as always ... the dark background is perfect, nothing disturbs subject´s character and expression.

Ha, its great photo Henk, but after reading your note I can appreciate it even more. I can just imagine him thinking "isn't that guy going to ever snap a picture?" And just when he decides to look what is the matter with you "bang," you got him. The black background is really great, and doesn't look fake or unnatural like so many other photos I see here on Trekearth.
Regards,
Ryan

Simply delightful Henk.
You have a very own style for portraits that I like very very much.
1/100 sec. there you were, you received your reward for your patience. A lovely face, what a nice contrast between the hair falling on his eyes and the shaved part, look at those bright intelligent eyes, the way he holds himself, the light blue of his shirt. Striking against the dark background. So fine-tuned. I am impressed.
Most interesting note too.

Thank you
Take care
Michèle

Hi Henk,
Another wonderful portrait, particularly with the simple and effective composition and the dark background that contrasts perfectly with the lighter areas of the robes and the soft skin texture. The just-visible receding floor creates a sensation of a large ambient space. But as your title says, what really makes it is that brief sidelong glance that betrays the boy’s curiosity while he is obviously trying to remain impassive. You did really well to catch such a fleeting moment.
I can’t really tell from this size but looks like there are some interesting monastery buildings reflected in his eyes.
John

Henk,
I just opened your Antelope Valley and in sequence this portrait. You're so bad. I think that I will stop with photography. You're to good. It seems to me that you're part of a different universe that I never will be able to reach. I feel humilated ...
In other words, I lamost can't recognize my own shot and this here seems to come straight out of NGM. It just that good!!!

Hola Henk.
Superb portrait of the young monk, a very neat and sharp image, I like the natural light on his face, the soft blue color of his robe goes very well with him,(maybe because it's my favorite color), the dark DOF enhances the figure of the young boy. Wonderful work.
Well done. TFS.

I find his haircut even more interesting than his furtive glance! The framing fits his posture, and the dark BG helps a lot in bringing him out.

Hi Henk,
Lovely portrait.
Lovely young monk.
Lovely eyecontact.
TFS,
Corinne

Hi Henk,
An outstanding portrait! This is not only technically excellent and beautifully rendered but you really captured the essense of this young man's being. He is still only a kid but he appears to have wisdom well beyond his years. Buddhists believe in reincarnation and I am sure that they believe that this boy is an "old soul" who was born with innate wisdom. His expression is just fantastic! I may be another two weeks with our portrait exchange. I have a lot of dance photo editing left to do.
Stan

Hello Henk
He looks serious and not so enthusiastic (the way he is looking at you!), but the result is great! His face is beautiful and the choice of the vertical framing fits well to this portrait. The dark area provides a perfect BG...
All the best
Marilyn

Hello, Henk -

Really a superb portrait. One nice touch I like is the way the black background lightens to brown in the lower right. The way he holds his head, the center line passing through the right eye (close, anyway), the clarity of the colors and the skin, all beautifully done.

Best,
Dan

Hi Henk.

So we have established two things so far. One, you have a better knowledge of photography than me and two, you have a better knowledge of Pink Floyd than me! I never knew that about the lyrics. Mind you I had never heard the song 'Too Much Rope' before. Both of these facts don't really sit well with me! :-) These, however, don't take away from the fact that I really like this picture. You have captured this at a perfect time. I can imagine you waiting, thinking 'look this way, look this way', and this has paid off with a great result.

Well done on this great capture!

Blair

Hoi Henk,

Heel goed werk!

Hi Henk,
Great portrait, smart to wait for that second of eye contact; he almost looks like he's hapa-houle.
HLJ, Pat

His shy expression is very well depicted here - difficult to figure out what he is thinking !
A very sober and simple portrait, with the dark background it makes it even more stricking.
Congratulations,
Cath.

..and there it is..the soul hunter back in action and another soul has been captured and delivered in raw format. You really are a hunter..chasing his prey waiting for the right moment..and yours are unique moments..this is a trademark beside the outstanding quality and anybody can't resist. He might be a young monk but he is a young human being first, with all his curiosity and this has been the crucial point in your favour. God bless him for this beautiful moment and God bless you to be always in the right place at the right time.
As far as I can tell I think this is one of the best portrait seen so far from you, and one of the best seen so far on this planet.
Regards,

Igor
