Ah...public busses in Vietnam...the stories we could tell...

the cramped seats, knees up to the neck,
the see-through hole to watch the road underneath

the driver trying to overtake two other busses
- in one go

bags everywhere, livestock, smick-smack food

the driver changing his mind
and stepping on the brake to avoid
a frontal collision

the endlesss yakety-yak talk,
drivers stopping for a family visit,
bags of dogs piled on the roof
with (...) dripping down your window

the driver stopping at another
friend's restaurant,
the bus being stormed
by hard selling shouters,
travelling salesmen performances

and then race off and
stop to pick up more passengers
(whether they want to or not)

again trying to overtake other cars,
the LOUD horn
to scare bicycles off the road

bad accidents and close escapes...

...but also

lots of friendly people
and a slice of life
AS REAL AS ITS GETS!

---

After 7 years, we will be returning to Vietnam this summer, so it's really ON THE ROAD AGAIN for us. We are looking forward!

Thanks for all your comments over the last year or so. I'll be back with more stories and pictures from roads less travelled by.

Hello Benny,
Yes, I know it all! I travelled with all those buses you described only last March, back in Vietnam after 13 years. But you didn't mention having to pay twice as much as the locals and being dumped 5 kilometers from the city, having to proceed with your luggage on the back of a motorbike.
The picture isn't spectacular, but it's a nice reminder that I survived this journey too - and loved it!
Have a nice time,
Gert

hello Benny
your note is very funny,I think the buses are the same all over Asia, but I don't know if it can be worse than in India!Congratulations for this 100th post,I hope to see more! I don't know when you are leaving to Vietnam,so I wish you a nice trip!
Regards.
Pascale

Hi Benny,
The picture you paint is so true! Reminds me of Cambodia 6 months ago where it sounds exactly the same, except they don't have roads there - only dirt tracks which make you and everything you own orange in about 5 minutes! On a trip that was supposedly 5 hours from Ban Lung to Phnomn Penn our driver momentarily lost vision in a cloud of orange dust from a bus going the other way, and we went a down pothole about 0.80m deep at 60kmh! Everyone and everything inside the bus hit the ceiling hard, I had a bruise the size of a plum on my shin from it, and the bus bent it's drive shaft, which meant the journey took 13hours as the broken bus had to drive slow, and all in conditions as you describe. But we live to tell the tale, and that's what it's about!
Thanks for reminding me, and sharing your own story. Hope you have a great trip this next time!
Regards
Lee

Hi Benny,
Wonderful shot of these buses that have seen a lot of road. Very colourful ones, full of local character. And your note tells rest of the story.

Hi Benny,
Your Number 100 shot! A beginning, I suppose. I must admit that busses are telling stories all over the world.
Best wishes
Marc

Hi Benny, great note, reminds me of my similar experiences in similar vehicles, you got it all. This composition works for me too, both busses sharp and giving a sense of the congestion that goes with bus station where you find this type of bus. nice one. have a good trip. Cheers, Steve

Dag Benny,

Mijn felicitaties voor uw 100ste foto on TE.

John.

Many congratulations for your 100.

The picture goes very well with the theme.

Wish you many more hundreds,

Regards,
Bishnu.

Bonsoir Benny,

Marc

Hi Benny,

excellent portrait of the bus! if I may call it that. I was reading a book recently and the writer had travelled through Afghanistan from Kabul to Herat in a bus similar to the one you describe here.

thanks for sharing

Kamran
