Kwangju (Gwangju) is a city in southwestern Korea at least 2,000 years old. Although it is most recently famous for the May 18 Democracy Movement uprising that took place there in 1980 and which was brutally suppressed (the Kwangju Massacre), it also has some lovely well-preserved medieval castles and palaces. While I was working in Seoul, I took a Sunday off and went down to see it.
This photo is a detail of the classic medieval Korean style of roof decoration.
