Photographer’s Note

I stayed in an apartment in San José, Costa Rica, for a month in early 2009. I found the heavy use of barbed wire and razor wire for household security to be depressing. One day, I set out to see if I could find something visually redeeming. This is the best result of that effort.

Hi William,

You have certainly taken these agents of sharp division and turned them into something remarkable, scary and interesting. As if a magical tunnel, leading to a special vine, but one which would tear you to bits if you tried to get there. A most original photograph and really well thought out. I think you accomplished your aim perfectly and then some!

I hope you used a telephoto lens on this one! I would not mess with concertina wire! Each coil consists of two oppositely wound helices which support each other against crushing. You wouldn't catch me crawling over under or through one of these...

Nice perspective and great detail.

Hello William,
I'm somewhat surprise to see this kind of fence used in Costa Rica. I guess for security reason they don't mind such an eye sore. I find that very depressing too. But at least here you find a nice POV to present this depressing scene in a little more interesting perspective. I like it. Tunnel vision view, we can help but get drawn into it. Wile the light is not great, but you did fine wiht the details and and colors and tone. It's still kind of depressing no matter how you look at it, the gray sky don't help neither. Once again thanks for the very thoughtful and honest and constructive critiques. Much appreciated. Have a nice evening.
