Che Guevara Memorial
The Memorial Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara is the biggest attraction in Santa Clara, the city that is forever associated with the name Che Guevara. Located in Plaza de la Revolution, the monument consists of a bronze statue of Che, complete with a broken arm in a cast, along with a relief showing the revolutionary in battle. Etched on the monument is the final letter from Che Guevara to Fidel Castro. Beneath this huge monument is Guevara's mausoleum and next to that is the Museo Historico de la Revolucion. In this museum visitors will find personal items of Che Guevara's, including the clothing he was wearing when he was murdered. There is also a video on his life. Overall the complex is superb and is definitely worth a visit.
The Memorial Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara was designed by Jorge Cao Campos and Jose Delarra for the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Santa Clara and unveiled for the first time on December 28, 1988.

Since i was young i knew this man by reading his diary and later the biography about him. Seeing this place and the memorial below made deep impression on me. There is another small statue in the town, and also the trains were the last battle of the revolution found place. Further more has Santa Clara not much to offer.
It seems a fast snapshot, but it isn't. I waited for some wind because i needed some red in this picture, the red from the Cuban flag. Also the guard i needed for scaling...i took about 15 minuted before i had them both.

Hi Henk
I know very well this place...I feel some tears !!!
Excellent composition from My lovely Sta Clara.
Many regards, Rafael

Hi Henk.

One of the heroes of the Cuban revolution...

I like the POV in which you make more important the figure of the Che.

Well done!

Tc, Oscar

I also read his diary, his biography, listen to that famous song (hasta siempre comandante Che Guevara) about him many times. It made an impression on you and I am sure it would make the same on me. The same kind of impression I felt in Santiago when I visited La Moneda Palace (Salvador Allende). In October I will have another strong emotions day when I go and visit Robben Island (Nelson Mandela) in South Africa.
Your picture is simply wonderful with those big clouds which may be bringing a future change. I love it. Thanks for the emotions and the photo.
Antonio

Hello Henk,
Une belle capture de ce monument sous un superbe ciel qui la met bien en valeur.
Les palmiers donnent une jolie touche de couleur.
Le cadrage est bien réalisé.
Best regards

"It seems a fast snapshot, but it isn't." It's funny that you mentioned it because it was the first thing that ran through my mind. Henk taking snapshots? But then I found the tiny guard and read your note. Yes, both the Cuban flag and the guard justify the centered position on the statue. They are a bit hard to see, but once you read the picture more closely you get the whole picture. But I guess this is one of those very special pictures that transcend its technical and aesthetically quality. I can sense by your note that this was a special moment for you and that constitutes one of the main reasons why you wanted to share it. As a picture it's ok :) but as a post it's amazing.

Hola Henk,
Indeed a person of considerable importance there, and I see a monument that in style reminds me of some I have seen in eastern Europe, for example dedicated to Lenin. A good take from a below position to magnify your subject, and I like the context setting floating Cuban flag in the background.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi Henk

Nice capture of this memorial to Che. Good comp and colors. Love the wide angle and Che against the blue sky. Good lines and the small Cuban flag in the distance is a great touch. Well done.

Hi Henk, good view of the statue of that famous guy, with a perfect composition and excellent quality.
thanks, ciao

Hi Henk,
Yes it doesnt seem as simple as it looks, lot of thought goes behind one photo. Inclusion of both the fluttering flag and the guard made for a wise choice.

This is a nice shot for its historical importance. i wish i could make it up someday to the place and feel proud and yet so little in front of this legendary figure.i get goose pimples writing this... :-)

Your patience was worth the effort as the flag and the guard make a difference to the composition. The statue placed against the cloud and not the blue part of the sky is also fortuitous as it provides a stronger contrast. The POV makes the whole structure look like a triangle. Good work
Kath

salut henk

Hello Henk,
An excellent photo with perfect composition and lighting. Che could have chosen to finish his medical degree and continue with his upper middle-class family tradition in Buenos Aires, but his motorcycle trip with his friend (a biologist I believe) transformed him profoundly. I read about him when I was younger also but the movie "Motorcyle Diaries" was so well done that I finally felt that I understood the man. He certainly didn't deserve to die in the brutal manner that he was.
Thanks for sharing,
Stan

Hello Henk,

Hi Henk - it was worth waiting to get the shot you wanted, the flag is a good addition, the guard is useful for defining scale too. Fine colours & well composed.

Thanks for the information about Che Guevara. I didn't know much about him but do recognize him from the hundreds of shirts I have seen his face on. I am impressed with the composition as well. by having the flag and the guard there make a great picture better. I'll learn to spend more time waiting for elements like this in the future(I hope).

Henk,
Great catch of this impressive memorial.
I like how your POV emphasizes the size of the statue, and of course how the polarized colors work well wth this image.
Beautiful,
Regards,
JB.

Great shot! I like the way the monument seems to build, from the left, up and up in a series of steps to the top, and then back down again. The clouds break up the sky, and the little bit of red from the flag adds a nice accent to the photo. Well done!

Hello Henk,
You are completly right, at first sight, your image just seems to be a fast snapshop with no great composition. At second view, first I understood why you did not vote for the vertical format which seemed more natural... because of the Cuban falg which is making all the difference, of course.
It has certainly be a very special moment, as the one I had on the revolution place in La Habana. Great picture, again ...
Have a nice day.
Best regards, Christian

Hi Henk!
Good composition with the two Cuban symbols and the hero at the highest point.A fine, sharp image and I like the colors, created by the polarizer.
Regards,Leo

Henk, a fine shot and well worth the wait. Even as a child I know about Che even in the USA, probably a different take on the story but famous nontheless.

The shot is very good as usual and both the flag and the guard add to it as you suggest. Great capture.

Greg

Hi Henk,

On your last picture, when you were announcing your next upload, I taught you were about to show us a pile of Che Guevara’s t-shirts...

So this is a good and surprising image. I’ve been three times in Cuba, but never to Santa Clara and the way you present it, with your image and your note make it looks like an enjoyable and interesting place.

These enormous memorials always carry a bolshevik aura, but this one is particularly likeable, thanks to the person it honors. You are clever to think about including the little details in your note, about waiting the right moment for everything to be at the right place. I think it shows how much little details can make the difference between a quick snapshot and a sharpshooter image.

Your photo is also an excellent example that shows how much a person in your picture can be highly desirable, for proportion matters. But you caught the perfect subject to fill this role, as a guard means something more «totalitarian», you know, when you have to put security force next to a statue???... I just think it’s a plus in your photo that conveys a higher sense of politic.

The flag worth the wait, as it stands proudly in the back, pretty small but consequently more precious and subtle.

Not only have you put your patience to the test, with the guard and the flag in order to get a high class result, but the clouds also arrived just in time to place themselves behind the statue. It creates a perfect background canvas that makes it stand out more, thanks to better colour contrast.

Excellent point of view, great composition, perfect light orientation and weather conditions.

Cheers!

André

Hi Henk,
A classical shot for Cuba, well taken with this angle to give a perfect composition, well the flag and colours.

bonjour henk
he was my hero for a long time and he still represent a revolutionary icon,
your daring composition highlight the statue , the flag is nicely included in the photo.

best regards
didier

Henk, your note gives the right impression of the labour that is behind a good photography. You pictured the composition right away, but still you didn't have it all. Waiting for 15 minutes seems to be worth this shot. You're right. The red is important and I wish the soldier would have a red barret, but that would have required probably years and not just 15 minutes.
2 years ago I was in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia) and goit very close to the place where Che was found and executed. Nothing glorious about that place at all.

Serwus Henk !
It doesn't look as snapshot at all, no need to mention it in the note :) It looks like a well thought-out composition from a very interesting place. And, what is funny, it concerns the problem of former "heroes'" monuments also in our part of Europe ;)
Best wishes,
Mat

If one wants to end up memorialized in a statue, there's nothing that will get you there like bloodthirstiness, at least if you end up on the winning side. It's true in every society, to varying degrees.

It was worth waiting for the flag, I think, as it adds an important touch of both color and meaning. Nice choice of POV, too. Regards, Ken.

tres belle;che et photo
merci
