Photographer’s Note

In the streets of Trinidad, time runs at the rhythm of the past.
Behind the grids, the faces watch those which dare to defy the sun which burns.
The old crocks seem parked for eternity.
The asses strike the paving stone at the rhythm of the nonchalance.
The old tired heroes return to the house to rest.

Time passes at the rhythm of the past ...

Dans les rues de Trinidad, le temps coule au rythme du passé.
Derrière les grilles, les visages épient ceux qui osent défier le soleil qui brûle.

Les vieilles bagnoles semblent garées pour l'éternité.
Les ânes frappent le pavé au rythme de la nonchalance.
Les vieux héros fatigués rentrent à la maison pour se reposer.

Nice image. The contrast between the stalled “modern” and the slow but moving “old fashion” carries a certain humor. It’s like they are both in starting line for a race, and we could already see the winner…

The POV is very well managed, bringing depth and dynamic to the scene. Still, I miss some more contrast, as the shadow areas are grayish and this takes a bit of impact to the image.

Very nice Bertrand and a nice note to excite the other senses too - a lovely combination of the old crock and the old guy on the donkey. There is a kind of humour of place here - looks like the right pace for me right now!!

Trinidad, si belle cité... J´aime bien cette photo, le cadrage est parfait et je trouve un certain realité de l´île dans l´interieur. Même j´aurais essayé de la donner plus de contrast. Merci et comme toujour pardon pour mon français mais je suis fatigué de l´anglais (OK, Ok, although it´s a nice lenguage like thousand more around the world)

I like the contrast between the old car and the donkey. Showing that the old means of transportation can survive to the new technologies. It's funny!

Nice verses, Bertrand, and a tough shot to bring, indeed, your defied the sun with your camera for this midday capture. I'd love to see a tad more saturation, but in fact, wish to enjoy this one on the terms you shot it and captured it, because your feelings guided your camera.

I can't help a little feeling of :-( for the little donkey, he looks so resigned.

La lumiere est peut etre dure mais la composition est vraiment super, j'adore le clin d'oeil a l'oncle Sam du petit ane cubain qui lui continue vaillamment sa route, cette photo la tu pourrais la vendre a Fidel ;-)

J'aime beaucoup l'ambiance de cette photo. La voiture comme tu le dis dans ta note semble être ici depuis des lustres et ce gars, sur son âne, sous un soleil de plomb..

Hello Bertrand,
voici une scene bien rigolote et fraiche. La lumiere semble tout ecraser ici, mais la partie qui est dans l'ombre equilibre la photo. Les couleurs d'ailleurs sont un regal pour les mirrettes et le contraste entre les 2 moyens de transports est amusant.

Il semble que ta photo réunisse tous les clichés de Cuba : la vieille voiture typique, les facades colorées, l'homme sur son âne, les rues pavées, le soleil...C'est du tout en un et c'est très réussi bravo

Hi Bertrand, A nice view of the row of the colorful buildings on the side. A nice contrast of the reliable and ride able donkey with the seems destroyed cars on the side. Nice contrast and an interesting comparison. A well taken picture and excellent job to get the scanned picture to this high quality image.

A nice daily life shot well capturing the atmosphere and way of life in Cuba. The car was too fast and had to be replaced by slower donkey :-)
BTW, it's interesting, that in thumbnail this picture looks too bright, but it's actually quite OK with nice pastel colours. Nice poetic note too. Well done!

It seems the traditional form of transport is still the best! A well realised subject and nicely composed. The car may be rusting but I still love the colours.

I like the contrast between the donkey & car as forms of transport. Good use of a strong diagonal in the composition. The slight overexposure, gives a sense of the heat & glare. C'est vraiment tres bon.

Bonjour Bertrand.
Le point de vue est superbement choisi et la perspective sur la rue et les maisons colorées est belle. La présence de l'homme sur son âne apporte une touche pittoresque et grâce à lui et à la présence de la vieille américaine rouillée, on a immédiatement la sensation d'être à Cuba. La lumière n'est pas vraiment fameuse, mais sa brillance exagérée doit être au moins autant due aux défauts du scan qu'à un réel problème d'exposition !

I guess this donkey is faster that yellow car. The light was very harsh here, but the photo turned out quite well. I like the colours of the houses and the car. The photo is very detailed and I like the cobble stones.

J'ai l'impression que l'ane ne souhaite pas avancer, il est probablement plus lent que la vieille bagnole! Belle composition et superbe lumière, la légère surexposition donne une meilleure idée de la chaleur ambiante et incite le voyageur à entrer au restaurant...

A poetic note for a beautiful daily life scene in Cuba. Everything would have be perfect if you could have reduced the harsh light of the sun, because it burns to much the pavement (to my taste). Nevertheless, a great picture either humorous or tragic...

Salut Bertrand,

I saw this on the main page of TE and I didn't resist writing about it, as it brings me back some good memories. I think I had lunch on that restaurant the last time I was in Trinidad (not a very good one, I must say, although the place is very charming).

It's a typical scene of the streets of that charming little town, that like you write, seems to have stopped in time. The POV is very well chosen and the harsh light is admirably controlled. Like someone else wrote, it's ironic that the 'newer' means of transportation is in worse shape than the less sophisticated donkey.
