Sunset at La Marina Photo

Photographer’s Note

Last weekend was a long weekend in the Dominican Republic, Monday was holiday and we spent three days in La Romana, about two hours drive from Santo Domingo, on Saturday afternoon I went to La Marina of Casa De Campo Hotel and waited until the last sunrays of the evening to try to take a sunset shot. As usual just rested my body against a light pole, held my breath and shot, the light you see in the boats located in the foreground are from the light pole I was resting my body. It was a beautiful evening, looking the yachts coming into the marina after spending most of the day fishing or going to Saona Island or Palmilla Beach, very popular places for the locals and the tourists.

Hola Emile,

What a nice light you got here. Not only in the sky, but also over the water and on both side of the image. The contrast with that blue gradient in the sky is wonderful, but also your pov is what i like here. Looks a very nice place to spend some time...

Les silhouettes des palmiers et des maisons ainsi que des bateaux se détachent parfaitement sur ces caudes couleurs du soir qui tombe.

tú ya sabes que con estas tomas de la puesta de sol, cuya luz y cuyos colores siempre son muy atractivos a la vista, tocas mi fibra sensible. Son fotos de una gran belleza que inspiran siempre una gran sensación de paz y felicidad.
Son aquellos momentos que todos queremos vivir muchas veces, y que no se olvidan nunca.
El lugar es realmente extraordinario, y el contraluz de las siluetas oscuras sobre el cielo con tonos naranja compone una imagen magnífica.
Me gusta, y espero disfrutar de un atardecer como este algún día, en vuestra compañía.

PS: hemos tenido una temporada de frío y tormentas como hacía muchos años que no se producía. El otro día murieron 4 jugadores infantiles del equipo de béisbol de Sant Boi, al colapsar el edificio donde estaban los túneles de bateo a causa del viento huracanado, y eso nos afectó bastante porque nuestros hijos habían jugado en este campo algunos partidos de la Liga Catalana cuando eran también niños, y se proclamaron campeones de Catalunya con el equipo del Hércules Hospitalet. En aquella época vivimos el ambiente del béisbol intensamente, a pesar de ser un deporte minoritario en España.

The sunset colours are beautiful and the effect on the water is stunning. There are some wonderful silhouette shapes, but also there is plenty of light on the foreground showing lots of detail. It looks like an idyllic place.

Emile, such a nice a typical image for the La Romana region. The warmness and mild late afternoon moment are well captured and I have the impression to be there, standing at your side while you were taking the shot. Quite interesting to notice the richness and details of the different lights going on here. The light at the sky is quite obvious, but the one reflecting at the boats to the left side are enigmatic.

Trees, boats, the lighthouse, the water... all absolving the light of the sunset on its own way, enriching the range of colours.

Evidemment, il semble bien difficile de ne pas tomber sous le charme de cette composition ! Il faut dire que la grisaille de la région parisienne n'ouvre pas ces perspectives. Merci, Emile, de nous faire rêver, de nous transporter dans un monde où la beauté est reine.
Cela fait du bien de s'évader à travers cette très belle image !

A most idyllic setting here Emile. The overall warm colours of the late day works well combined with the lights around. Nice work.
BTW: My wife and I looked into some holidays in your country in the autnum, but later got the impression that maybe the weather would not be the best in the planned periode (September 2009). What do you say? If any tips pls. use the personal e-mail option at my homepage.

No se que decir sobre esta toma... Todo se observa tan armónicamente y con cada cosa en su lugar, lo que le da un equilibrio perfecto en cuanto a composición.

La degradación de las tonalidades, le da un encanto sin igual. Sin lugar a dudas en un atardecer esplendoroso captado en el momento indicado con un adecuado manejo de la luz. Felicitaciones

You clearly have a very steady hand to get such sharp silhouettes at 1/3 of a second. I especially like the feathery detail of the palms. The colors are soft and natural while the reflecting path through the water invites us to the lighthouse.
