Photographer’s Note
Larimar (also lorimar) is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue. The deep blue variant is known as volcanic blue. (Source: Wikipedia)
My note:
This man is extracting the blue gem stones out of rocks mined out in Puerto Plata. His shop appears to be a part of the Amber and Larimar Museum but I'm sure it was set up as a tourist attraction rather than a manufacturing plant.
The amber (a lot lighter in color than the Baltic amber) and larimar can be purchased in the museum store. Remember: don't pay the asking price! Dominicans are very nice and are used to hassling. You may be able to get what you want at 50 to 75 percent off.
