León - Subtiaba’s sawdust carpets

Sawdust carpets (tapetes de aserrín) are one or more layers of coloured sawdust laid on the ground as decoration. Sometimes also other materials are used, such as rice and maize.

The tradition of decorating streets in this fashion began in Europe. It originated in Santa Cruz de Tenerife at the feast of Corpus Christi.
The Spanish brought the tradition to the Americas. Today the tradition is the strongest in Mexico and in Central America.

Two places in Central America are especially known for their annual celebration with coloured sawdust carpets: Antigua in Guatemala and Subtiaba, a suburb of León in Nicaragua.

In Subtiaba every year on Easter Saturday the colourful carpets are made in a few streets in the center of the district.
Earlier I have already shown a picture of the main church of Subtiaba, the Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista. The streets where the sawdust carpets are laid, are not far from this church.
Considering it is La Semana Santa in Nicaragua, most carpets have a religious theme.

I arrived in Subtiaba at the beginning of the afternoon and people still had to start laying the carpets.
But the work progressed rapidly and the carpets were all finished by the end of the afternoon. During that time I watched the work up close.
In the beginning of the afternoon there were very few visitors but the people came flocking to have a look as soon as the works approached their final stage.
In the early evening there was also a procession.

Information on the history and the places of these carpets: from Wikipedia.
