Photographer’s Note

This is a man that I saw every day out on the streets in the tiny city of Jinotepe, Nicaragua. In 8 days, I did not meet a single person in Jinotepe that spoke English and I got the feeling that my friends and I were the first 'white people' they had ever seen. The people of Jinotepe put aside their negativity towards America and took us in just wonderfully.

strong exposure. Fine use of the flash. Very interesting person. IMHO I would separate the man and just a little cut out him.

Hi Liza,
I really like this shot - wide angle works here extremely well. You have got really close - something that is always an advantage when shooting people. Blue sky in the background is good. Only few minor things that I would have changed - I feel that photo could have been a bit sharper to make wrinkles stand out even more and dark area on the left is a bit distracting but otherwise you've done great job with fill flash.

hi liza,
i have just spent some weeks in a small village near jinotepe.. i was in jinotepe quite often and i only completely agree with you. it can be a little frustrating when nobody talks english and everybody stares at you all the time! so next time i go to nicaragua, i must improve on my spanish.
on the art note, this is a great photograph. the focus on the old mans face is perfect. the hat and the background colors also fit the picture well..
however, i think he has skin cancer on his nose (it is the medical student in me speaking)...
again, a great picture!
