Photographer’s Note
This is the door to one of the pretty Berati Houses on the Castle Hill side. All the doors are quite big and all houses have a little courtyard even though the space constraints are enourmous. I guess they must have gone in these door into the courtyard with their horses to unload. The sign on the door says "Cultural Monument, proteceted by the state". I wish the state did a bit more than just "protect" them. They need restoration works and as for the electric, telephone and sewerage systems they need complete redoing. And even more difficult will be to persuade people to live in them because although pretty, these houses can not support the modern equipment that the modern Albanians have and want such as garages, cars, fitted kitchens etc..
