Photographer's Note

Travels on the Silk Road:
A little off the ancient Silk Road I found this "picture book" church Shen Kolli (=St. Nicolas) in Voskopoje/Albania (see my other picture). It was built in 1726 during Ottoman times, so no cupola was to be seen from the outside. It has external wall paintings (and internal frescos). This one presents the martyrium of Saint Ignatius Theophoros of Antiochia, reportedly brought to Rome and killed by Lions in 107 AD. I don't know the date of the paintings. Note the scratched out eyes. Since for reasons not given in he Khuran Man cannot be pictorially presented (ikonoklasm), Muslims in Ottoman times have sometimes either covered church paintings with chalk or at least scratched out the eyes.

The picure had to be worked in PS to remove many traces of tourist graffiti and neglect.
