Travels on the Silk Road:
Another picture of the wall paintings in the Mborje/Albania curch of St. Risto(see other picture). It is reportedly from 13th century. The pictures are in a state of neglect and are actually being repaired summarily. Note the scratched out eyes: Islamic ikonoklasm prohibits the pictorial representation of man (not to be confounded with Christian Orthodox ikonoklasm which took place much earlier and ended during the 9th century). During Ottoman times church paintings were sometimes covered with chalk or at least the eyes scratched out. But the fixation of electrical wires on the painting (upper right corner) is a modern sign of ignorance.

Hallo Dietrich!
Unglaublich, wie sich diese Farben erhalten haben. Dieses Kirchlein scheint ein wahres Schatzkästchen zu sein. Schade, dass Bilderstürmerei wohl immer schon ein Thema war - aufgrund von Ignoranz und und falschen Vorbildern ...

Habe in jüngster Zeit einige Bilder von Albanien auf Trekearth entdeckt, die unglaublich sind. Liegst am Land oder an den Fotografen?
