Photographer’s Note

Tirana, capital of Albania. This is the very central part of the city, the Skanderbeg Square. Skanderbeg (Skënderbej), originally Gjergj Kastrioti, is the great national hero, who successfully fought the Ottomans in the 15th century.

There used to be another national hero, communist leader Enver Hoxha, but while his statue was pulled down long ago and most Albanians are trying hard to forget him, Skanderbeg lives on.

This square and the streets surrounding it were designed and built by Italians in the 1920's.

In a workshop you can see the square from another angle on a much nicer day.
