City hall Brussels

The construction of the town hall was entrusted to Jacob van Tienen, pupil of Jan van Osy, who was the founder of Brabant Gothic. The construction of the left wing and the belfry (lower part of the current tower) started in 1402 under the auspices of the wealthy families of the city. The town hall would not be bigger. The guilds also wanted to participate in the city council. The discontent led to riots that ultimately resulted in a compromise whereby elected representatives of the guilds were also represented on the board. The town hall became too small.

Charlemagne laid the first stone of the right wing that was started in 1444. The right wing is smaller than the left and is the work of Willem de Voghel, who in 1452 also became the architect of the Magna Aula. The tower of the town hall, 96 m high, was built from 1449 by Jan van Ruisbroeck, master builder of Philip the Good. The sculpture that adorns the building is folk.
