Photographer's Note

The CONSCIENCEPLEIN is Antwerp's cutest square. It's rather small place with no cars allowed. The square was named after Hendrik Conscience, a 19th century romantic writer, who was famous for being one of the first Belgian writers to write in Dutch (Flemish).

In the sixties and seventies this was the centre of Antwerp's hippie scene. In fact Pink Floyd played in one of the bars here in 1968. These days the place is rather quiet. My favourite bar is around the corner, though...

The CARLOS BORROMEUSCHURCH is the star of the square, though. This baroque church was built in the early 17th century, which is often regarded as the golden age of Antwerp.

In fact that's debatable. After a religion-inspired civil war, the low countries were split in two and most of the protestant elite moved north of the border to Holland. Still, to save the (catholic) face of the city, the Spanish empire invested a lot in the development of the city's (catholic) arts and culture.

This particular church is famous for its elaborate facade. The interior is worth a visit too, especially since it has been fully restored to glory again (after the 2009 fire).
