Ghent a walk through the city with camera in hand.

The “Vrijdagmarkt” Friday market in the Belgian city of Ghent is one of the oldest squares in the city. The square played a major role in the history of the city.
The Vrijdagmarkt is about one hectare in size. In the center of the square is a statue of Jacob van Artevelde who proclaimed King Edward III of England king of France on the square on January 26, 1340, and thereby defied the authority of the Count of Flanders and his liege lord. Five years later, weavers and fullers assassinated each other on this square as a prelude to the murder of James van Artevelde, the wise man of Ghent.
The Gentenaars organized the joyful income of the counts of Flanders; it was their forum and they played jousting here. The market was also the scene of executions and settlements. Van Butzel, who was convicted of father-murder, was the last to be beheaded by the guillotine in 1822

Hello John, the square looks enormous from your chosen point of view.
I love the architecture, every building has a different style and details. The various towers and spires point to the sky, and are balanced in your composition by the statue.

As always, a fascinating and very informative note and a beautiful photograph to accompany it.

The light here is beautifully soft and the colours true. I very much like your composition with the statue of Jacob van Artevelde perfectly placed in he frame and with several people at its base relaxing and talking. Perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.

I like the group of people seated around the statue. In Venice this would be illegal and someone would come running out demanding you leave immediately! I have read this even annoys local Venetians! Good sharpness and framing. Tfs!

This is an amazingly clear and sharp photo. You captured a pleasant atmosphere among the young people gathered around the statue, which you placed perfectly one third from the left. The background offers a magnificent view of four towers and many fine buildings. The colours are beautifully mild and natural.

Hello John,

This looks like an important gathering place as well as a market place. It is not surprising, for it is a huge, open space, surrounded by interesting and historic buildings, with a huge, memorial statue in its centre, which can easily be adopted as a seating place.
You have taken a very fine photograph, detailing all the aspects that I have mentioned, in a very well balanced composition. The off-centre statue is proud against the sky and is nicely balanced by the spires in the b/g.
Even the cobbles are used effectively, creating a subtle guide from the f/g to the statue, and the large group of figures.

Het licht is prachtig hier. Het zorgt voor natuurlijke en zachte kleuren onder een lichtblauwe lucht. De gevels en torens rond het plein zijn erg aantrekkelijk en het standbeeld staat mooi aan de linkerkant van de compositie.

Knappe, zachte stadsfoto. Goed pov zodat je de uitgestrekte vingers van de hand van Jakob van Artevelde kan tellen. Knappe backdrop ook. Wel opvallend dat er auto's op het plein mogen.

Ditmaal een foto van Gent naast één van Brugge op de site!
Ik moet bekennen dat de kleuren van de wapenschilden op het monument me nooit eerder zo opvielen.
Eigenlijk best een kleurrijk beeld van de Vrijdagmarkt met ook nog de groenten- of fruitmarkt op de achtergrond.
Heel levendig ook. Mensen lopen zowat alle richtingen uit.
Uiteraard zorgen de mooie gebouwen en de drie torens voor een prachtige achtergrond.
Heel mooi gepresenteerd.

The four turrets and the statue in the big lot of market sq., draw much attention when looking at this picture, John. The people/visitors/tourists enliven the scene with extra vivid colors of their clothes.

Dag John,
Een schitterende foto van de Vrijdags Markt in Gent. Maar de foto krijgt extra glans door het volk dat er rondloopt en vooral de jeugd die zich heeft verzameld rond het beeld. Zij hebben waarschijnlijk geen flauw benul van de historische betekenis van het beeld en zouden eigenlijk jouw noot moeten lezen.

what a beautiful spot! I don't recall ever seeing this place before.
There is so much going on here with the market adding some action, there are also some crowds of people enjoying the monument.
I am mainly interested in the surrounding area with so many interesting buildings, few church towers.
There is so much to see there!!!

Hi John,
This is a very elegant square !
Although it's market day, it doesn't look that busy, but only because it's so large that there is room for all the stalls, the cars and the people, and there is still a lot of free space.
I am glad it's a cheerful meeting place nowadays after it has seen quite violent events in the past !
After all said and done, life has improved a lot compared to the barbaric ways of the past.

John, the old square represents a meeting point for the city dwellers. Some people are sitting on the central statue. The friday market is surrounded with a church and remarkable old buildings. Fine colors, good image quality and excellent light, instructive photo note, regards.
