Korenmarkt Centre from Ghent
By the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the southwest side of the square was subjected to major adjustments. The warehouse and a number of adjacent buildings were broken down and the post office was replaced. To the south of the warehouse was the narrow Sterrestraat, which walked west to the bridge over the Leie. After the north side of the street was demolished for the post office, the early 20th century also broke down the houses to the south for the construction of the wide new St. Michiels and Sint-Michielsbrug. After the Second World War a fire destroyed a number of buildings on the north side of the square. Here the Sarma was located and this department store drew up a new shopping complex in the late 1950s with exterior facades.
