Bruges a walk through the city with camera in hand

Pole bow

This sober, neoclassical triumphal arch was erected in 1929-1930 as a tribute to the victims of the Great War. The design - also of the sculpture - is by the Bruges artist J. Fonteyne.

This arc is located on the border of the Kartuizerinnenstraat and the Oude Burg and links to the former monastery church of the Carthusian people, which since 1927 has been transformed into a military chapel.
The arc of Euvillesteen was placed in 1929-1930 on the initiative of the Bruges mayor and aldermen. In 1927, the adjoining chapel was transformed into an official memorial of the city of Bruges and it was decided that a pompous arch would be an appropriate entrance to the Kartuizerinnenstraat. The design comes from the Bruges sculptor Jules Fonteyne (1878-1964), the then director of the Bruges Municipal Academy. He also produced the models and performed all the sculptures. The triumphal arch was placed by contractor Lanssens and C ° from Bruges. On September 23, 1929, the pompous arch was finished on Fonteyne's sculpture.
It is a sober, neoclassical arc with round-arched passage, the main frame of which is based on four pillars on the base and crowned with a Corinthian capitals. The profiled round arch with keystone stands on simple rectangular pilasters. The coats of arms of Bruges and Flanders were applied to the swallows. The main frame consists of an architrave with the inscription "Pro Patria" under a strongly protruding, profiled cornice. Two urns on the corners and in the middle a sculpted Belgian coat of arms with crown, held by two climbing lions, crown the whole. Under the coat of arms, "Eendracht makes power".

I hope that you enjoy it
