After leaving the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, we took the train to Brussels. Since Brussels is a significant centre for international institutions like the European Union and NATO, I didn't expect such a light-hearted, user-friendly city. Perhaps a part of the joy was the first real sunshine I'd seen in two weeks but the city seemed full of nooks where people could relax and enjoy the wonderful trees, light-hearted artwork and music. The city felt like a festival.

Update: For me, the light through the trees stars here but I didn't capture that feeling for you. Oh well, you can't post a winner everytime. I appreciate the time people spent telling me why they didn't like it.

I would like to live in a city as this:)
True,you've captured a relaxing atmosphere
All the best,dear Pat

Hello Pat,
A nice capture from Brussels. Colors are nice, too.
best regards,
Tulay

Pat,
a typical relaxing summer moment in a very european city. The green on the top is an interesting compositional element and the gesture of the two men makes me wonder what the attraction at the right side must have been. Personally I think that your composition lacks of some action or story. Your note and title of a joyous city doesn't go along very well with your shot.
Peter

hello pat

hmm, not sure about this one either. the category says "artwork", but the artfork itself (the sculpture) seems all too insignificant in your composition. meanwhile, the overall ambience of the composition does not seem to match neither the title nor the note. but maybe i am missing something here?

kind regards,
kristaps

Hi Pat,
It just because you have alot of beautiful shots on your pervious, when your posted a simple ordinary one we are hoping too much, but still interesting to see two guys sitting (looks like they don't know each other) with the sculpture as bg and the nice green foliage on top. tfs

Hello Pat,
Nice clean shot of the city life. Well placed subject against the casual activities surrounding it. Well exposed in good contrasting color.
Well done!

jusni

Hello Pat -

Ummmm. I am wondering where this image came from as it does not seem to be up to your quality - it lacks something that I am not sure I can put my finger on. I have spent a few minutes trying to think of what to say - I think the images lacks a central subject. Something well defined or maybe there is too much here and the image needs to be simplified. I really can not express what is not working I am at a loss. Sorry, I knows this is no help.

Thank you for sharing.

John

PS - I just looked at the comments and I guess I am not alone.

Hi Pat,
There is alot of relaxing going on here with the two gentlemen enjoying an unhurried smoke and the sculptures in a supine pose. The green and yellow of the trees add some nice colors to this lazy image.
Regards, Tom

Hello Patricia,
I think it's remarkable how you chance the subject. From the previous ones with fantastic light (from i really thought they were very good) to a scene that comes not even close to those two. What made you decide to upload this one?
To be honest i expected something like the previous ones, but don't ask me why i thought that. Maybe because you were in the perfect light brigade ;-)
This one is completly different and i do not really know what to think about it. Maybe Peter is right about the composition and the things that are going on...or better said NOT going on.
Is it a crop? It lacks of detail and sharpness what sometimes is caused by a heavy crop. Whatever, it your picture and you should have a good reason for uploading it ;-)
Regards, Henk

Hi Pat,

Another wonderful shot of Belgium with the people relaxing right in the middle of the city. Great light, wonderful colors and details! Great POV and great quality! Great work, Pat!

Greetings,
Ann

PS: We're travelling to Europe for 4 weeks this summer (visiting my family)...I can't wait!

it's easy to give a critique over a photograph. The only thing I can say is that it doesn't attract me. What I like to add and that's why I give you a point is that you did a good job to show that a busy city has his quiet spots. For my job I had to cross Brussels every day and for us Belgians, it's always busy. If you ever come back to Brussels, go visit the botanique, it's next to the Brussels inner boulevard, but if you walk through the park there is silence, or the warandepark, same story. in the center of town, but peacefull.

Hola Pat.
Great view of a daily life shot in one of the park in Brussels. Very well captured. Good POV, colors and clarity. Well done.
Cheers.

Hi Pat. Nice relaxing shot, the people seated and the reclining statue give the relaxed mood. Good to see the green in the middle of such a major city. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hola Pat,

The light through the leaves look very nice. I think it highlights the foreground very nicely, however I am more attracted by the casual scene. The two men seem to be just relaxing on the benches, enjoying the day. There is a feeling not too associated with European cities because of the modern building in the background. The sculpture on the right though remind me of the artistic elements found everywhere in the old world. Nice picture.

Roberto

Hi Pat,
as somebody living in Brussels I can appreciate that you found it a relaxing place, it is also not a very big capital if you compare to most other ones. But I miss a few things here...sharpness, the crop shows either too much or not enough in a way, the men are looking at something but what ? I think I understand what you wanted to convey but sorry it doesn't come through for me.
I wasn't on TE yet at that time, otherwise I would have been glad to meet you !:-)
TFS, Regards
Michèle

Hi Pat
I guess that most big cities in Europe are more "user-friendly" than those in the US.
This picture seems a bit too cropped.

Hello Pat,
They look good and they help improve the air, so we should take good care of the city trees!
Nice details in this peaceful street scenery, and the fine colour of green is refreshing...
Greetings,
