Photographer’s Note

A view over the Spiegelrei canal, once the heart of the foreign merchants’ quarter. Today, it's one of the richest part of Bruges.

Coming out in early February, there will be a new movie called "In Bruges", featuring Colin Farrel and Ralph Fiennes. According to the previews I have seen, we will be able to have an extensive view of this fascinating medieval city that serves as a background for the whole film.

Hello Andre,

I like this shot, it presents us with a remarkable atmosphere in this enjoyable blue hour. The lights and reflections are solid and enduring. The exquisite stillness of the water is immaculate and serves as point of perfect symmetry. The curve of traffic around the corner is evident as the lighting changes from yellow to red - the transition in angle from headlights to rear lights. Excellent contrasts, saturation and clarity. Beautiful. I hope to match this quality of night photography someday.

Cool. Very cool. The deep blues against the dark blacks and luminous whites look amazing. I really should have tried a blue hour shot for your "usual suspect"... I like this shot very much. Those electric blues always touch my heart in a special way. Don't ask me why. Great pov you chosen here.

Waou ! Quelle leçon !
C'est absolument superbe. Le cadrage, l'exposition, l'utilisation du canal pour que le regard contourne les maisons et admire l'architecture, la brillante réflection; et en bonus la branche qui occupe élégamment ce coin de magnifique ciel nuageux.

C'est beau propre et sophistique quasiment a un point qu'on dirait du HDR, je vois que tu as frequente les bons quartiers afin de pouvoir ouvrir ton commerce de diamants une fois retourne dans ta belle province, finalement avec des nuages ca rend quand meme pas si mal la blue hour, non ?

tiens, le pixel, quand il copie my pov à la blue hour, il cite au moins ses sources, lol!
pas grave, André, je me souviens bien de t'avoir conseille de copier les POV intéressants et celui-là l'est incontestablement!
les traces des phares sont un plus.

Hello Andre,

This is excellent! The image was well composed by placing the horizon line in the middle to show the beautiful reflections. You captured a fantastic sky and balanced the artificial and natural light very well! The light trails left by the cars emphasized the leading line nicely! It is a very good blue hour shot! Thanks for sharing!

This is a great blue hour shot! The sky is very impressive creating a nice backdrop for the photo. You have done a great job of blending natural and artificial lighting to create a great photo. The reflection is great and provides nice balance and symmetry. The colors are great as is the sharpness and DOF.

As-tu rencontré également notre ami John ? Il avait réalisé une jolie série sur Bruges ! Tu nous présentes une très belle image de cette ville que l'on appelle la Venise du nord ! Je vois que tu deviens un expert de la "Blue Hour" ! De plus, les nuages bleutés sont splendides ici ! Ils donnent une sorte de perspective dans le ciel !
Tu dis dans ta réponse à Didier, qu'il s'agit d'un stitch ! Eh bien il est des plus réussi car les phares de voitures semblent n'être qu'une seule et même trace !
Le temps de pose est vraiment bien choisi !

Tu vas trouve car un peur gore, voire meme de tres mauvais gout, mais j'ai cru lire ton titre avec le C de canal en moins...alors tu t'imagine mon desarroi ;o) ... Je me suis dit Andre aurait il un probleme digestif ? y a peut etre un lien avec le fleuve ... bref me suisdemande ou etait le rapport avec la photo et que fait le ToS ... faut que je me soigne je pense.

Une bel pixellade (c'est comme ca qu'on dit) c'est pas lui le roi de la blue hour d'ailleurs ? terrain prive la ;o)

Great reflections, water seems to be still quite often on those canals unlike more open lakes. Great architecture, even shadow parts show well. And I guess it's that what's required some treatment.

The reflections are perfect on the smooth mirror surface of the water, and the whole image has a surreal feeling to it. I love the streaking lines of colour and the twinkling lights. Great point of view too so that we can see down two sides of the waterway.

What a great perspective and depth...wowwwww.
I have never been to Brugge, but seeing these kind of pictures it becomes really inviting for a long weekend. Although light is everywhere, the whole place breaths a kind of serenity i have seldom seen in a town like this.
I like it a lot...stunning exposure and an even better composition.!!!!

Unfortunately, TE won't allow me to express what I feel when I look at this photo. Lets just say I used the F-word. From me and my limited vocabulary, that's a really good compliment! Everything is great. I wish I knew what the hell the blue hour was so I might get a shot like this but I don't think I could get close. I love it all. I would buy this print and hang it on my wall.

Wow! Is this real? How can it look so crystal clear? The exposure is spot on without a tiny flaw. The starlights and the tone of the blue are so charming. And the compo is clever. All in all, it's perfect.

Bonjour, André. Des eaux sombres qui conviennent parfaitment pour accueillir des reflets. Et quels reflets. Le Canal du Miroir, bien nommé, est bordé de splendides maisons qui ne demandent qu'à s'admirer. La gestion de la lumière est parfaite, la perspective sur la gauche très attrayante avec ce canal qui fuit vers le pont et le clocher en bout de course. Bruges est décidément une très belle ville dont tu vantes bien les charmes.

This is gorgeous! The long exposure shows the night details with such sharpness. The water is like glass, reflecting the beautiful architecture perfectly. The sky is great, and there is the perfect compositional balance between the canal and the buildings. Really great!

Il n'y a pas frand chose à rajouter sinon que c'est vraiment superbe cette réalisation et que ce point de vue vers la loge des bourgeois est un peu moins fréquent que d'autres.

At first, I thought - or I felt - that the sky was a bit unnatural in its bue. But then when scanning down to the houses, I see how nicely exposed and natural the houses are! Guess it's the moving of the clouds with the 30 seconds that gave the unnatural feel to me. Thanks for sharing!

Bonjour André,
Bruges est considérée comme la plus belle ville de Belgique, la Venise du NOrd attire bien des touristes par ses canaux et ses demeures très anciennes bien entretenues.
De nuit ou de jour , elle offre de belles perspectives aux photographes et tu as mis ton talent en route pour en faire jaillir la beauté nocturne.
L'heure bleue dans toute sa splendeur.

That is one fantastic photo of Bruges!

BTW: My wife (she's Belgian) tells me that the film makes fun of Bruges. Truth be told, Belgians are very much in the "Polish joke” genre.
