Wiki facts: The Cadrilater is the southern part of Dobroudja. It was a part of Romania, but political interests combined with the fact that our leaders never knew wich side to fight alongside, decided to give it to Bulgaria. Balchik was a Romanian town, a cultural city in wich there were painters, poets and all sorts of entertainers specific to the time between WWI and WWII.
Non-wiki facts: Before 1989, the southern parts of Romania used to watch European and World Championships broadcasted by the Bulgarian televisions, because under Ceausescu our program was two hours of himself speaking and a Russian film (nothing wrong with that). Small bootleg buisnesses were developing by the borders especially the Romanians bringing in Bulgarian stuff mostly vegetable and fruit based goods (very appreciated worldwide). After 1989 a sense of ...not really hate but something similar took over the both nations feelings for the neighbours. OK, our politicians still named Bulgaria "our friends from across the Danube"...perfect cover for the tensions that continued growing. They were calling us "polenta eaters" and we called them "cucumber eaters", jokes with Bulgarian and Romanians were and unfortunately still are told. Some shy steps are beeing made now...some local talents from both Romania and Bulgaria joined forces to make music and Romanians cross the border to register their cars into Bulgaria because of the outrageous taxes from Romania. It's allright, but it's still about the money...
Life facts: Last year i took a few trips into Bulgaria. I have no problem with Balchik beeing in Bulgaria, especially that they did a great job with the castle and its surroundings, the botanical garden and all that. This is my friendship offer to them...
